23 years ago today, the Somali Democratic Republic fell
23 years and counting of civil war in the most failed state in the world, Somalia.
In that tie, Somalia has become famous for its breakaway parts, warlords, multiple famines and humanitiarian crises, pirates, terrorist groups, Islamist governments, and clan warfare.
There have been many attempts from the outside world to help or contain the Somali problem when it became clear Somalis couldn't do it on their own. UNOSOM I, UNITAF, UNOSOM II, the Ethiopian intervention of 2006, the Kenyan intervention of 2011, EU NAVFOR ATALANTA, AMISOM, and others.
The three largest refugee camps in the world are all housing mainly Somalis fleeing fighting, famine and drought
1) Dadaab Camp just over the border in Kenya hosting 500,000 souls
2) Dollo Ado camp just over the border in Ethiopia hosting 200,000 souls
3) Kakuma camp just over the border in Kenya hosting 125,000 souls
Here I will share a photo collage of this ongoing 23 year long saga.
