The federal government of Somalia today concluded a 6 month-long training course for its first Commandos who will be operating in the country for the first time in nearly 25 years.
According to Defense Minister, Mohamed Sheik Hassan Hamud, the training was conducted by Somali military experts and some foreign trainers.

Somali Army Chief of Staff Brigadier, General Dahir Aden Elmi, said that the new Commandos were collected from regions across the country.

“We are very hopeful that the new Commandos will be able to restore the Special Operations Force to its former glory and I am very grateful to the United States government for helping with the implementation of this training course,” the Somali Army Chief of Staff told the closing ceremony.

The Defense Minister, who concluded the training course for the Somali Commandos on Saturday, said that he was very happy with the revival of Somalia’s Commandos once known as ‘Danab’, but unfortunately collapsed after the fall of Somalia in 1991.

“The Commandos will be based at the Balli Dogle military camp and they will have complete military equipment,” the Defense Minister said adding that the Commandos will get their rights from the Somali government.

This will be the first time in nearly 25 years that Somalia’s Commandos return into the platform. Once upon a time, the Somali military were one of the strongest army in Africa.

just prevent government officials from stealing their pay and they will multiply in effectiveness.
just pay them already!!!!!!!!

You already have enough men and weapons to take on alshabab, but you do not have the willpower,
and you are incredibly corrupt.

If somaliland stops paying its soldiers within months you will have isbaaros, and islamist millitias will start walking around freely armed, and start taking over towns.

Those 'commandos' haven't been trained at 100%. Whoever their trainers (West, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, etc) are wouldn't want Somali commandos who could challenge them. So, expect them to underperform as they don't stand any chances against HSM.

I don't see why this would be amusing. This is a designated Commando battalion. They've only trained for 6 months. After another 6 months of training with equipment provided, they could rival any Commando unit on the continent. Folks expect the State Security apparatus and government to achieve everything within a year and a half.

There aren't many Major Generals in the SNA. Aside from the Chiefs of the military branches, there are only a few around.

In 1977, the Soviets who trained the SNA were shocked and taken aback by their achievements and capabilities. They provided enough training for the Somali military to maintain a strong feel in the region, the Somali military officers drilled the soldiers in excess, they trained them into a war machine.

NATO has been training Afghan commandos for some 10 years, yet still underperform against the Taliban. Let's hope those freshly trained Somali commandos can do a better job.

The afghan army is also underpaid and demoralized, they dont have the will to fight.
why should they fight and die for NATO or the mayor of kabul, when NATO will leave sooner or later and those they are fighting will be their new bosses.
They are focused on staying alive and feeding their families and let those NATO fools risk their lives,
and to do they they cooperate with taliban and provide them with detailed intelligence,
taliban have infiltrated every single unit in the afghan army down to the company level.

its the same set of priorities for the somalis as well, why should they fight for some silly government nationalism is long dead.
The same useless men in the somali army will fight like lions for their qabiil, or join alshabab and fight with 4 times the effectiveness.

its all about willpower.
why should they fight? they have no reason to.

As with everything else these people continue to rape our nation's name. These commandos are not recruited from all regions and districts, rather just beyond the immediate environs of Mogadishu.

Whose loyalty the federal government has is obvious since it is unwilling to extend its field of scope beyond the immediate environs of the one clan dominated city of Mogadishu. Just like the ridiculous notion of buying arms for an army that is so undisciplined that its components often fight among themselves, sell their arms, their equipment, even their uniforms to the Shabab they are supposed to fight, the Mogadishu regime doesn't make much sense; for there is strong likelihood that any newly obtained arms and equipments might end up in the hands of the Shabab. One does not need to be a military expert to see this dangerous likelihood.
