The Saylaci & Heelo Dances

[Hawdian]

Like its name suggests, this folklore has its roots in the medieval town of Zeila (Saylac) in northern Somaliland. The dance begun originally as a Suufi dance and that's why they recite certain Islamic phrases such as Bismillahi, Salala calahi...the performers also spin like the Suufis of Turkey.

Here they interpreted the Sufi dance into their own. It is one of my favorite Somali folklore and the best performers are the Samaroon and Issa clans. Credit goes to them



When it comes to Somali folklore only two communities dominate it; the north (Somaliland, Djibouti) and west (Somali Region, Somali Galbeed). 9/10 Somali folklore originate from these regions including Saylaci, Dhaanto, Heelo, Jandheer, Botar...gobile, Sadexley etc.

The next one is Heelo, which has its origins in Borama---Awdal. How it begun? Not quiet sure but something about some dude becoming restrained when his car broke down and he begun singing about his ordeal. It's not that old...probably began in the 1940ish-50ish...

Saylac is all Samaroon and the Samaroon perform the Saylaci the best. Cise Warabe always tries to throw the Samaroon under the bus but when it back fires they run to the usual "we are all Dir". That's why they called hyenas. If the Hyena meets a lion he laughs if of heeheehehehehe hehehehehee otherwise he will go thru your bones.
