Begging, begging, begging and more begging. Now by begging I don't necessarly mean begging in the literal sense like on the street. What I mean is for us Somalis asking someone to do something for You comes before wanting to try to do it for Yourself. In Somalia, You will not believe how for instance in some official Gov delegations to foreign Country, some Somali Gov Staffers who are very well paid actually beg the foreign embassies for money When they arrive. The Government itself on many occasions is content spending money for private purposes, knowing that they can always beg for more funds. As You see in the diaspora many times, a Somali You barely even know will not ask, but expect You to take Him somewhere, or expect You to buy Him food at a restaurant, and so on and so forth. I believe even as much as qabilism, self sufficiency should be another major them preached when it comes to outreach in the Somali community.

Somalis are interdependent group and since we value group-controlled resources ( Tribal societies share resources), it's expected that people will rely on others to be taken care off. If you want self-sufficiency,there needs to be change in cultural/social norms.

I think Self Sufficiency will help fight qabilism. When We realize the success of My tribal member, distant relative, heck even the success of Your personal family is not Your success, and that everybody has to work for what they get, then qabilism will get phased out. Basically forgetting about trying to benefit from anything other than Your work.

This kid is confusing the clan norms of hosting a guess with his upbringing America of individualism. I don't know abt the gov officials beggin but the other info suggests that you are perplexed by why you are expect to buy something when you have your cousin visited you from uptown.

One of jobs consist of visiting senior homes and I've came to appreciate the beautiful culture we have. I would say go pay a visit to your local senior home to see why Western civilization is going downhill in an rapid fashion.
