What Your Workout Says About Your Social Class.

Post by unstoppablefade »

The main things I took away from this article was:

Big and Bulky: Blue collar, low class, ditch digger
Smaller and Leaner: White cooler, high class, executive/office worker

While one is associated with being 'smarter', more educated and self-controlled, the other with being 'dumb' and ignorant and violent. It's essentially the beast of burden vs. sleek wealthy leader. Growing up in a low income aree I can definitely attest to the fact that when I first started lifting at in my late teens it was so intimidating initially because of all the swole and jacked men that were in the gym. I now live in a upper-middle class area and I noticed the glaring change in the whole gym environment; less people are in the free weights/barbell section and you'll always see the treadmill section packed.

As interesting as this article is, one thing kept bothering me the whole time i was reading it. So yes he did observe and point out the unfortunate ugliness of the prejudices of the upper class and their need to shun and shame anything that is different and yet his response is to give in and assimilate (Bourgeois as fuck smh). But the fact that he worries too much of what others think of him came across stronger, to me, than the whole point of the article. I kind of feel like this is a common issue with gym go-ers today; both upper and lower classes.

I live in a middle-class area, and it's still full of giant knuckleheads who think it's cool to do curls in the power rack :pacspit:

Sorry key you're still classified under the poor niggas. I should have made it clear in my post, since I chose two extremes, but the small/lean look is sought after by the wealthy and elite (which you are not). And yeah nothing pisses me off than curl bros who do that shit in the squat rack.
