So don't listen to those who only mention Bilal ra as the only black Companion of the prophet saw.
Umm Ayman ra was the servant of the prophet's mother and she would look after the prophet even after his mother's death. She was a Habesha and was beloved to the prophet saw, and she was like a mother to the prophet saw. The prophet saw frees her after he marries Khadijah ra.
Zaid bin Haritha ra was sold into slavery when he was captured as a boy, Khadijah was given him as a present by her nephew, and she gave it to the prophet when they married. The prophet then adopted him, even changing his name to Zaid ibn Muhammad until the ayah came down where it said you weren't allowed to do this.
Zaid was from the tribe of Kalb that lived in Najd, they are Qahtani arabs.
Zaid ra was referred to as a short, flat-nosed man, of a very dark brown skin by Tabari in his book Tarikh al-Rusul wal-Muluk: Biographies of the Prophet's Companions and Their Successors, p.10. Tabari was an early historian and mufassir during the third century after Hijra.
I love these Sahabis not because they were black, but because they were the most beloved to our prophet saw.
Here's some history of these two great companions ra of our prophet saw, incidentally they got married, and had a son called Usamah bin Zaid, who was very beloved by the prophet.
