The father and presumably the brother in the end weren't even talking. They didn't even partake in the altercation. The mother seemed clearly torn between her religious convictions and wanting her son. In the end God mattered most to her...not the most shocking thing.

Up to that point, she was calm and the rest of the family clearly felt heavy.

As for him...from the get go sounded like anally retentive, disrespectful, very confrontational, borderline insulting of his family. It is when he clearly denied the hardwork and sacrifice of his family having given his family shelter and food that made the mom snap. I would think any circumstance in which anyone would take that credit away from the dad would make her snap.

Judging from the family, they sound pretty rural and poor. Denying a working man's hard work for his family is probably as emotionally charged as it can get.
