In 1814, British forces defeated American militia in Bladensburg, Maryland and marched to the Capitol. Then burned the White House.

its amazing nobody mentioned an invading US army had burned the legislative assembly building in York, Upper Canada (now Toronto, Ontario, Canada) in April 1813, setting the stage for a retaliation in kind?
