Somalia needs a Cultural Reset

Post by Jove »

According to the Human Development Index (HDI), Somalia is one of the worst countries in the world. The Somali race is afflicted by chronic political instability, economic deprivation, warfare, famine, and many other catastrophic problems. For some Somalis there is a tendency to blame others for our misfortunes. But I say the disastrous condition of Somalis stems from a backwards culture that is inhospitable to the construction and maintenance of a strong and viable nation-state. The solution to Somalia's problems must involve radical change. It must involve placing certain cultural practices and beliefs —e.g, patriarchy, tribalism, excessive superstition—under the guillotine. Look at all the advanced nations of the world: all of them have reached their positions only after radical changes swept their cultures. Without radical change, I do not believe Somalia will ever advance to any respectable stage of human development—even if it were to somehow recover significant natural resources. For those of you who disagree with me, who want to respond to this post in hostility and denial, remember this: you are a refugee.

BaastoUnit-
Please exit my thread. You have the IQ of a dead battery. Frankly I think you should be asphyxiated.

thegoodshepherd-
If you are against FGM, why don't you support other anti-patriarchy cultural changes?

The UN who publishes the HDI needs a reset.
Its all imperialist neocolonialist bullshit aimed at changing the 'rule of the jungle'
instead of the 'strong survive', they neocons want the 'weak to survive' and rule.

I also believe we need a reset. And the reset will come from learned and intelligent Somalis, not the reer baadiye/refugees flocking into cities. Including FGM, the qabilism so inherent in politics, the backwards mentalities, the goals that either are not feasible or just don't make sense (someone thinking we can surpass Dubai within 10 yrs ).

There is also the hypocrisy that surrounds everything. How can law-makers be busy getting high in the evenings? How can I want to better the entire populace when I am more concerned about my own qabiil succeeding? Or I harbor ignorant vendettas against my grandfather's enemies?

Somalis are just anarchists right now but they will stop acting like animals when they get a little bit of education. They are also arrogant and willfully ignorant so i don't know if they will ever change but I hope so soon.

Besides the language, eating a banana with every meal, hagbad, qabiil beefs, female genital mutilation, is Somali culture still relevant today? I thought we became more Arabs than Arabs themselves, while every Somali home is identical to the other in terms fadhi carbeed, names of children and when this generation become parents of teenagers, there will be a separate mum's and dad's Hookah warning their children not to touch it with a sign of 'death penalty if you touch it.' Culture always re-invents itself.

Somali culture for the most part only still exists in SL and Djibouti. It has been supplanted by arab-wannabes, cadaan-wannabes and Madow-wannabes.

Lakin although Hargeisa and Djibouti are still homes of somali poetry, literature, plays and music, most of the great stuff died with former regime. Qaraami music would shit on the autotune-keyboard wankfest that is somali music today.

As for politics, today every somali leader is a dhi.lo, they only differ on the asking price. Some are free like in xamar and K5, some are expensive like in Djibouti and others are coked up on drugs e.g. SL. There needs to be a massive upheaval of the gutter trash and a grass-roots movement of young, educated and patriotic somalis needs to be established. The old institutions of qabiil need to be sidelined and talent/hardwork need to promoted. We need, in effect, a cultural evolution.
