Hey! i had a question for you guys!
if you've ever been to somalia, do you get discriminated against? also by the general somali population, do they view you as equals?
And In the general world do you go by arab or somali?

The Reer Xamar and Barawani communities of Southern Somalia were liquidated shortly after the fall of the late government.

Ps. is this their music? and if so...do you know any other singers like her? I'm sick of the auto tuned, same beat type of music, I've been hearing before.

By and large ethnically cleansed away through rape, slaughter and expulsion from the country and the confiscation of their property. Not to say they're not there anymore, just no where near the numbers or influence they had prior to 1991.KnowThySelf23 wrote:oh they aren't in somalia anymore? what do you mean by "liquidated"?Based wrote:The Reer Xamar and Barawani communities of Southern Somalia were liquidated shortly after the fall of the late government.

The poor bastards were ethnically cleansed after the "liberation" of Somalia.
There aren't too many of them left in Somalia.

Everyone suffered during those times, no particular group specially them was ethnically cleansed specifically; I'm not down playing at all. They probably have suffered more than some but I wouldn't called it 'ethnically cleansed'. Most of them got out and live in Kenya.
btw, some of my immediate family are cad-cad so I know what I'm talking about.

That song is a Reer Xamar artist singing for Sultan Qaboos of Oman.
I prefer Xamaraawi songs from before the autotune wave. Like Axmed Killer's Asliyee and his version of Soo Guuree.

Yes, Mogadishu and all the other big coastal towns in southern Somalia were built largely by Arab, Portuguese, Persian and other traders. You can even hear in the song you linked where Warda Karama is praising the Omani Sultans that built the towers of Shingaani and Xamarweyne, which are the old parts of Mogadishu. Mogadishu was part of the Sultan of Oman's Swahili coastal Sultanate which also included Kismaayo, Merka and Baraawe for hundreds of years.

Most of the Somali port-cities (Zeila, Xaafuun, Berbera, Mogadishu, Eyl) have been inhabited for 2000 years as attested by the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea. There's a similar Chinese text from the mid 9th century that mentions the Po pa li (Somali) being in possession of an important trading center in what is now Berbera iirc.

Yes, and it's well-documented that the rulers of the Somalian parts of the Swahili coast were interchangeably Arabs, Persians, Portuguese and Italians. Ethnic Somalis were almost always nomads outside the urban areas. Somalis living in and ruling Xamar is actually a very new thing that's only been the case since 1960.
