I will tell you a true story. Very common story I keep hearing

Someone invested hundreds of thousands of dollars back home on a small factory. Their life savings. Employed about 20 people. Khat addicts.

Workers were lazy. They don't work. They want khat and payment before work is done. They want money and Khat upfront for next weeks work.

But they don't worry. They want money for free.

This is the pool of people available in the workforce. Bums. The workforce are generally khat addicts who seek work they will not really work to fund their habits

Business failed, like so many businesses opened by diaspora people.

Think twice before starting anything there.

That sucks. If I had $200k, I'd be smart enough and buy land to build an apartment complex.

Hire bantus

You'd think people back home would want a steady job and regular sustained income.

I am sure there are honest and hard working Somalis still left back home, but the problem is, people hire and give shaqo to their own tol. There is also alot of corruption and the legal system isn't well developed.

My uncle only hires from his own sub-clan and his business has been thriving for over 15 years. I kid you not.

At the port of Bosaso they stopped hiring Jareers because they do not work as hard as the Oromos. Last year when I visited most of the port workers were Oromos. A positive development.
