Why do somalis think they are African Americans?

Post by SonofANomad »

Of all the ethnic Groups ive encountered never seen such self hate in Somali diaspora youth! They want lump themselves together With any non-Somali person!

Never have ive seen a nigerian or a ghanian person push soo hard to be african americans!

The jareer Ghanians and Nigerians actually distance themselves from AAs!

When my uncle came to the US he was told by his Nigerian Co-Worker to keep himself away from Afro Americans and not associate himself With them!

look at this article
http://ourlegaci.com/2010/05/19/the-bee ... ericans-2/
You’re not African American, you’re American. You guys just say African American so you can have some relation to Africa.”

These are the words that were spoken to me from a Nigerian lady that I attended college with
. It was hurtful to hear her say this. I have traveled to Zambia twice and the first time was challenging. In a debriefing session I explained to the white people on the trip, that my entire life I had been told that I am African American, and here I was in Africa and had no culture to call my own. When a man in the market realized that I couldn’t speak Bemba he told my Zambian host that I should be ashamed of myself for not knowing my language. He didn’t know that I wasn’t from Zambia, because everything about me along with the rest of the African American community screams Africa. While in Zambia, I noticed how the people looked just like African Americans back home. It was very evident that African Americans are from Africa.

There are two major problems at hand: not enough African Americans acknowledge that they are Africans and not enough Africans acknowledge that African Americans are African. I’m sure growing up we have all heard the “You look like you African” jokes. Well that cruel joke has followed us to adulthood. How can a Black person look like an African, when they are African? And why is that meant to be offensive? I will admit that it wasn’t until after my voyage to the Motherland, that I began to take ownership of my African roots. What’s weird is when I say that I’m African around African Americans that know me, they look at me like I’m crazy and question me. I respond by saying “You’re African too!”

On the other hand I have heard Africans speak like the Nigerian lady who told me that I wasn’t African. Is the history of slavery not enough explanation on how we separated from our homeland? That isn’t American history; it’s African and American history. There are African Americans like myself who have gone through major identity crisis’ and struggled over the fact that we have no knowledge of what country in Africa we came from. Just because we weren’t born in Africa, don’t strip us of our African identity and heritage.

What frustrates me is I can see how the media has played a crucial role in dividing us. In America they have presented Africa to us as the Dark Continent with uncivilized people. To an extent we have believed everything we’ve seen on television. I remember on my first trip to Africa I was scared that some random men were going to break into the house I was staying and rape me. How crazy is that? In Africa they have presented African Americans as all being uneducated, rappers, thugs, and hoes. It was very irritating when the Africans would try to use slang with me. The media alone has caused us to form stereotypes about each other.

This is an issue that frequently comes up in my diverse circle of friends, so I wanted to share it with you guys. I leave you with this question:

At what point did African Americans stop being African? When we got off the slave ship?
Yet these somali youth want emulate them Accept them integrate them in to somali community and make African american problems their own!

I am getting seriously annoyed by those self hating inferiority complex driven Social justice feminist Warriors on twitter!

look at some of these tweets!

this is what i tweeted
this is the response from a self hating somali girl! Apperantly some weird Logic going on here! I have inferiority complex for wanting to remain somali and only identify as a somali!

here is me explaining it to her as well sas her retarded response
So by her Logic we are affected by the same police brutality and therefore somalis are African american slave descandents!

But where is this police brutality or disadvantage? when nigerians and ghanians are the most sucssesful Groups in America!
Why do somalis want to handicap themselves?

i hope Kaffiye and Sophisticate can shed some light on this!

Bro SonofANomad, first, African Americans (AAs) are people whose some of their ancestors have roots in the African continent, and we (Somalis) are from that same continent (Africa). Second, in America, we're a visible minority who are black as well. Third, there are AAs who would put their life on the line to defend you and your family simply because you're black and visible minority. Fourth, all minorities who are doing well in America are reaping the fruits of the struggle that AAs have put up in this country.

With that being said, I've my my own bad experiences with many AAs, but do understand that there are good and bad in any community. I think we should take the good things from them and leave the bad out. I think we should also overlook their shortcomings as we have never lived in their shoes. Their ordeal is something that no other ethnic group has gone through in America!

in that case chinese are the same as pakistanis and indians?

Fristly
African americans come frome west africa! its no where near Somalia!

Secondly

There are somalis living in South America europe Australia Asia!

So did these african americans you speak highly off fight for those somalis? No!

Thirdly!

You seem to forget that somalis have been in America prior to the civil war and pave the way!

While these jareers were on their Liberation struggle during th 1960s

Somalis just walsed in and got high paying jobs and got Equal rights to education etc.

Watch and see

i dont hate them or think less of them! All im saying is that we are somalis and i want stay beign a Somali!

The African-Americans are the people who were enslaved and then released from slavery, residing in North America for the last 400 years.

They are a completely different people from Somalis. They aren't from us and we aren't from them. It makes no sense for us to appropriate their culture and history as their own, or to appropriate their struggles and triumphs. Honestly some of them aren't bad people, but it's delusional for us to assume that we Somalis are cut from the same cloth as them.

Even the Nigerians differ dramatically from African-Americans. And the success of the Nigerians in the USA is due to their hardworking nature and their culture which values success and achievement

its wrong to say all american somalis think this way, although some do. i dont understand why you guys are complaining, because when somalia comes back to life which it will, our somali african american brtohers and sisters, will be the bottom feeders and their offspring will become excellent servants to us ethnicly aware somalis. so clap for our servants in the making !!!!

Guys, it is true that we're different from them; however, AAs produced men like Malcom X, a fellow Muslim, who has warned us how the colonialists want to treat Africans and the images they want the world to see about Africa. Somalia fell through the same traps that Malcolm has warned us 50 years ago.

Additionally, civil rights leaders like Jesse Jackson and others have long argued for Somalia and Africa in general.

Brothers, get your priorities straight. It is one thing to be a unique ethnic group in Africa, but there is another reality in America, and that reality is you can'y run away from being black!

Keep in mind I've already expressed my disdain to many AAs whom I don't want to associate with, but at the same time, I am realist and know the world that I am living in.

My fellow nomad, there is nothing idiotic about Gegiroor's words. Whether you like it or not, Billy Bob Joe from South Carolina
sees Tyrone the rapper from Altanta and Faarax from Garoowe the exact same way: black. Heck, haven't you heard them say "go back to Africa" to Indians and Chinese immigrants? lol Yup it's happened.

Of course, that doesn't mean we're one and the same, but working with minority and marginalized groups for a common goal (success and advancement of these said groups) isn't tantamount to an identity crisis disaster. When a man supports women's right to equal pay for the exact same job as men, that doesn't make him a woman: it makes him a seeker and fighter for justice and equality for a disparaged group (in this case: women).

Soomaali baan nahay and so proud of it. But this topic has been beaten to death. And to incognito's point, many Somalis in
the diaspora are proud of their "Somaliness"

Well put!
Why do you think so many somalis feel the need to link themselves up With african americans? Arent they proud of their somali Heritage!

I have never seen a korean think he was Japanese or apropriate Japanese culture triumph and struggle even tho they look indistinguishable!

heck you will never see chinese think he was North Indian even tho they have the same skin color & hair texture!

i just want answers as to why they feel the need to jump on this pro black hype and claim AAs

see how they beg Jareers on twitter for their acceptance!

Spare me ur self hate! The true reality and not one adopted and appropriated by foreigners is that i am Somali!
