Somalis and pride
I have always known Somalis are prideful people but I always thought it was the elders. I have been proven wrong the past couple weeks. I work as a tutor both at school and privately and I have noticed Somali students avoid seeking help because they feel embarrassed admitting they don't understand certain things. For example I know 3 guys in my school who are all pursuing Engineering degree and one girl who wants to become a chemist and their classes are pretty difficult. I see none of them at the tutoring center save for the girl who shows up now and then. I know the guys pretty well and I know two of them are repeating a math course that they failed last year. They tell me they don't study much to which I responded they are not going to survive if they don't study hard! I offered to help them for free on their math courses and they declined!
I know plenty of Somali students who don't seek help because they think it hurts their pride. What the hell is going on? Meanwhile a white kid and a Bengali kid call me all the time to get some help with their course work. In high school it was the same story and those Somali kids put pride before anything else.

Re: Somalis and pride
Siena and hyper I don't think they are lazy at all I can swear on it that it is nothing but islawaynin. Hyper all Engineering students take extremely math intensive courses and there is no way to avoid that. If they hated it so much they would switch their majors.

Some people learn better outside the class room.
I thought you were going to use this forum as example of Somali's n pride.

Re: Somalis and pride
That's not pride. That's just sheer laziness and a lack of determination. If they were proud they'd be too afraid to fail and study their arses off.
Re: Somalis and pride
What world are you living in
if anything there are too many Somalis in tuition centres because their mothers are led to believe their kids will fail if Mr Patel from the tuition centre doesn't give them extra homework. So little Mrs miskiin eedo Farxiyo ends up paying 500 quid a month to rush her little ones there on the weekend.
Walahi you just gotta be smart with your children. From a young age you tell them if they don't work hard enough they will regret it. Their white friend John or Greg might be flunking lessons but he's got a guaranteed job in his Dad's Kwik fit garage, and his Indian friend Mandeep is joining his uncles junior accountancy firm when he graduates. But our uncle Aw Faarax Jilacoow is too busy in the maqaaxi and is looking for a job himself Adiga ma laguu adeegi Karo kkkkk

I was the same in my secondary school. I didn't like tutors except one. a Spanish sexy teacher I just liked her self.

They do want help, but not yours. Did that ever occur to you?

Very true. The private tutor craze has only just started hitting the Somali community. But the key to exam success is to do as much studying by your self as well.
Re: Somalis and pride
I do agree with Meth on this. This is how it usually goes in the class after he finishes explaining the lesson:
Macalinka: Casharka mala fahmay?
Ardayda: (Total silence) which he takes it as YES, WE DID, when infact majority of them didn't.
