They are not there to "help" the people. So, it really doesn't matter whether they are "Johnny come lately". They are there to prop up the thuggish regime.

The Syria saga will come to a conclusion if the Russians deploy ground troops.

They could also be in for another decade of turmoil if the Americans back Isis and other rebel groups

predicted this weeks ago.
it wasnt much of a prediction..
there was no choice..

there was going to be a new ISIS like force moving from turkey's border heavily armed.
The syrians would go in to crush them and the US would bomb the Syrian army and start a no fly zone ala Libya.

Deployment of Russian assets was the only way to stop this...

PS Don't confuse securing the Russian naval station at Tartus with a wider deployment.

So Russia is now siding with a brutal dictator who massacred his own people and displaced millions more.

i live in perth now when i was in dubai, i would get the latest news before Aljazeera or any news site, sometimes as little as a few hours to a day.
If you learn to sort the chaff out of the wheat, you can get allot of info..

Russia will not stop supporting assad and iran and will do every thing to keep him part of any future settlement in syria to maintain its market cards-selling weapons to the gulf countries- but not to the point of waging wars

Russia is now suggesting a sunni pro-saudi pm who enjoys much authorities and assad as the president

this was rejected by the dictator who sees himself as the only leader!

iran is taking advantage of the nuclear deal to turn the tables on the sunni camp(tukey-saudi arabia) by joinning the US-led coalition against daesh in iraq and syria and becoming part of the geneva talks

Russia supports these efforts while the US is welcoming iran as a partner in iraq and syria but refuses assad to join it lol
