Last year, the case of Denise Harvey made it all the way to Federal Court after an appeal by the government. She was convicted in the U.S. of having sex with a 16-year-old boy, but broke no Canadian laws and was granted asylum because the IRB agreed her punishment in the U.S. was cruel and unusual. The government appeal was unsuccessful."
If they allowed this US woman child molester asylum, they should allow this dumb adoon too. If not, it is a clear and cut racism.
^^ i hope they dnt, if they let this guy in, than all other african americans will just cross the border nd do the same, we cant have that, there are millions actual refugees who in desperate need for protection
There are holes in his argument but in principle it's a good idea. More should be doing this and in other countries as well. Embarrass the hell out of the US and force other countries to put some pressure on them
Unless this is seen as a way of reducing AA population in the US and therefore an incentive not to change behaviour
This is BS. Black men are not targeted as a group by the police. Sure there are few bad -- really bad apples -- in every police force but overwhelming majority of cops do their jobs within the parameters of the law.
There are disproportionate number of blacks incarcerated but they commit disproportionate number of crimes against fellow blacks. Do the crime, do the time. Tell that to the law abiding citizens of Watts, Southside of Chicago and Anacostia, D.C., that black on black crime is not real.
I have never felt being targeted by a cop, but was stopped few times while driving and it was my fault. Yes, my fault, I was speeding. I drive a car with over 300hp under the hood. It doesn't feel like I am speeding but they've clocked me at 90 mph in a 60 mph freeway driving, or have changed lanes quickly without signaling on city streets.
The outcome: I have been let go few times without a ticket, other times, I contested and judge dismissed the cases. This is just an individual perspective.
Guys, there is some truth to this man's claim. Not on the police angle, but the systematic racism against minorities that is entrenched in the system. For instance, when a guy commits a crime, he is caught, persecuted, and sent to jail. When he gets out after doing the time, he is going to a world where he can't hold a job, he can't rent a house, and he can't open a business - all due to his crime in the past. The crime could have been a minor one, but due to the conviction in his record, his life is gone.
In America, you have Jim Crow laws that target minorities. These laws are designed to keep their population numbers down, and it is very hard to change them. Ask yourself, if a guy did his time in prison, what more does he owe to society? Again he can't hold a job, he can't open a business, and he can't rent a house. That is pure evil.
If you look at his claim, the prior minor conviction is part of it. I think Canada should give him a temporary refugee status and he should prove that he is a hard-working, law-abiding individual before he is given a permanent residency. This may afterall put pressure on the American lawmakers to change the Jim Crow laws.
If you commit a felony, you do have a conviction record. If your crime happened before age 21 (depending on the severity of the crime, misdemeanor or felony), it is expunged from records and no conviction shows up on your record.
Listen, I knew very well at age 12 if I did "X", consequences were "Y". Why can't these thugs understand there is consequence to every action? Many of these hoodlums are serial offenders; they have rap sheets as tall as you.
Ever wonder why black men have high unemployment rate? It is due to being convicts. Cynic would say, this is modern-day slavery or Jim Crow laws -- keeping the black man down. The realist would say, he committed a crime (mostly on a black person), then he should do the time.
You want to get out of this vicious circle: don't commit crime, no conviction, go to school, work hard and the world is your oyster.
First, I have no love lost with the thugs who commit crime. They killed many innocent men and women and destroyed families. I am a believer that their punishment in prison should be much more severe, including the death penalty.
Second, the point I was raising was if a person committed a crime, did the time, and paid his dues to society, with the exception of certain crimes like sex offenders, I think that should be good enough. Once that person is released from a prison, the system should not victimize him (or her) as well. In today's America, that is not the case. Once the ex-convict applies for a job and they do a background check, he or she is a toast. Nobody will give him (or her) a job due to his or her prior conviction.
Third, in Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, the drug (crack) sold is different than the white cocaine sold in white neighborhoods. That means the laws are different and very severe on those who are caught with crack cocaine. There are also loopholes that allow those who are caught in white cocaine to commit themselves to a community service and removal of that conviction from their record. Crack-cocaine laws are on a different ballgame: Strict sentencing, severe and long-term penalties, and a criminal record that is with them for the rest of their lives.
Finally, I think these Jim Crow laws are designed to keep their population numbers down. I mean if they release someone from a prison, why would they victimize him (or her) in the real world? Many of the men who are caught up with this cycle commit crime again after they couldn't secure a living due to the endless background checks instituted against them. Afterall, it is not them who bring drugs to America and are not behind the reasons why drugs should be illegal when alcohol is free. Americans have really a long way to go before they can remove the discriminatory and systematic racism from the system. Let us not forget that many of the prisons in America are run by private corporations and they need people filling in those cells. Hence the need more Jim Crow laws and young people populating in those cells, so corporations can reap the benefits.
