It has been a park since the beginning of the 1900s, most British shooting and traveling books are full of " the lion's paw mountains " , unfortunately most of its wild life is exterminated, leapords, lesser and greater kudu and small endemic antelopes and also much of the great ceder trees with huge trunks.

One question though, is grazing is still allowed, and in the picture above why is the old man carrying a hatchet? He is cutting wood!

No, grazing is not allowed at all! And much of the mount is guarded by armed police who are hired to protect the mountain from cutting trees & grazing! Old man is called Bixi Maxamed, he's the tour guide of the mountain and it's not a hatchet but a hangool! He lives on the mountain, very humble and decent man, told me he's over 100 years old!

This was just one section of the mountain! The big trees are still there along with historical building and the caves!
There is also a plant a nursery on the mountain with over 3000 trees! Few more years it'll be a jungle, the grass was up to the kneecap!

3000 trees in a nursery is a science beyond Somalis is there a botanist who classified and collectes seeds? Because most of the trees in Gacan Libaax are not found either in the coast Guban nor in the plains on the ogo , similar trees and shrubs and grass can only found in Sanaag Daalo range and Calmadow.

Much of the work on the mountain is done by Prof. Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, Current chairperson of Candlelight Organization and a Professor at the field of environment at the University of Hargeisa along with Shukri Haji Ismail, Current Minister of Environment and Rural Development!
