Programs

There are 3 modes of Study at the Islamic Institute of Philosophy:

2- Year Certificate Program, all 14 Courses offered by IIP must be completed in order, to finish.

Master’s Course, a Thesis is needed on a topic determined by the Sheikh. Within a 6 month period, and not less then 3 months.

Individual Course, one may take any one course of the 14 offered anytime, at the approval of the Sheikh.

Programs may be started at any date, The Programs go at your pace, there is no set time limit on the courses, accept that you must finish the program within 2 years, from start. There is no minimum time frame to finish the program.

Overview:

Lesson 1- History and Development of Islamic Philosophy

Islamic philosophy has often been treated as being largely of historical interest, belonging to the history of ideas rather than to philosophical study. This course successfully overturns that view. Emphasizing the living nature and rich diversity of the subject, it examines the main thinkers and schools of thought, discusses the key concepts of Islamic philosophy and covers a vast geographical area.

Comprehensive introduction to Al-Kindi.

Lesson 3- Ibn Khaldun

Comprehensive introduction to Ibn Khaldun.

Lesson 4- Al-Farabi

Comprehensive introduction to al-Farabi - the first Islamic philosopher to translate the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Lesson 5- Al-Ghazali

Expansive discussion of Imam al Ghazali's views on ethics, inner development, the psychological nature of man, virtues, vices, God (Allah), and much more.

Lesson 6- Ibn Arabi

Comprehensive introduction to Ibn Arabi.

Lesson 7- Ibn Rushd

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the life, times, and achievements of Averroes, a twelfth-century Muslim philosopher whose ideas were so controversial that his books were burnt not once, but twice. A fascinating introduction that covers all the key issues and underlines the importance of Islamic philosophy as a vital ingredient in contemporary Western culture.

Lesson 8- Ibn Hazm

A comprehensive look at the life of the great Andalusian scholar and philosopher, Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi.

Lesson 9- Muhammed Iqbal

Iqbal's poems established him as a rising poet on the literary horizon of the subcontinent. His brilliance later dazzled the eyes of people living in distant countries and won for him an honorable place amongst the immortal poets of the world. It was after his return from Europe that he started his real poetic career. His transitory period was over. His ideas had matured and he had formulated his outlook on human aspects, which lasted, throughout his life. "Asraari-Khudi" (Secrets of Self) and "Rumuzi-Bekhudi" (Mysteries of Selflessness) thrilled the literary circles of the East and the West. These poems deliver the message he has for mankind and deal with the development of the individual self and the problems an individual faces as a member of society.

Lesson 10- “Ihya Ulum-ud-Din“, Al-Ghazali

The masterpiece of Imam al-Ghazali, unquestionably one of the greatest thinkers and theologians of Islam. He reflects on the totality of his studies in Sufism, skepticism, philosophy, and spiritual retreat. This work, known in English as "Revival of the Sciences." Volume 1 - Book of Worship, Volume 2 - Book of Worldly Usages, Volume 3 - Book of Destructive Evils, Volume 4 - Book of Constructive Virtues.

Lesson 11- “The Mysteries of Bearing Witness to the Oneness of God and Prophethood of Muhammed“, Ibn Al-Arabi

The author explains the mysteries of bearing witness to the Oneness of God and prophethood of Muhammad which is the first pillar of Islam.
Ibn al-Arabi was born in Andalusia in Muslim Spain. He is the greatest exponent of Islamic doctrines including its metaphysical and cosmological aspects. In this work, however, he describes in simple terms the mysteries of bearing witness.

Lesson 12- “The Bezels of Wisdom“, Ibn Al-Arabi

Ibn Al-'Arabi was a Sufi born in twelfth-century Spain. The Bezels of Wisdom was written during the author's later years and was intended to be a synthesis of his spiritual doctrine.
Bezel means a setting in which a gem, engraved with one's name, is set to make a seal ring. The setting in which Ibn Al-'Arabi has placed his spiritual wisdom are the lives of the prophets. It was in Damascus that he had the vision that prompted him to write this book. He describes it in his preface: "I saw the Apostle of God in a visitation…He had in his hand a book and he said to me, 'This is the book of the bezels of Wisdom; take it and bring it to men that they might benefit from it.'
"The book portrays the wisdom of love through Abraham, of the unseen through Job, of light through Joseph, of intimacy through Elias and so on. Ibn Al-'Arabi invites us in these pages to explore the inner spiritual meanings of the Quran, its heartful meanings. In one of his poems he stated, "Love is the creed I hold: wherever turns His camels, Love is still my creed and faith."
Lesson 13- “Faith and Reason in Islam“, Ibn Rushd

The philosopher Averroes' insistence that religion could be reasoned about and yet remain a valid experience shocked the Islamic world to its core, leading to the burning of his books. This new translation - the only such available in English - of a truly classic work reveals Averroes' key beliefs about reason and religion, in a clear and accessible manner. Suitable for scholars and interested readers alike, this unique text proves that today's disputes between religion, reason and science are not new, but have their roots in the work of philosophers like Averroes, whose effect upon modern thought is fully revealed in this fascinating book.

Lesson 14- “The Elixir of Gnostics“, Mulla Sadra

Sadr al-Din Muhammad Shirazi (1572-1640), more commonly called Mulla Sadra, was one of the grand scholars of later-period Islamic philosophy and has grown to become one of the best-known Muslim philosophers. Iksir al-'Arifin, or Elixir of the Gnostics, is unique among Sadra's writings in that it reworks and amplifies an earlier Persian work, the Jawidan-nama (Book of the Everlasting) by Afdal al-Din Kashani, or Baba Afdal.
The underlying theme of Sadra's amplification is emblematic of Muslim philosophy: the importance of self-knowledge in an individual's journey of "Origin and Return," the soul's origins with God and its eventual return to Him. Everything, Sadra says, is on such a path, gradually disengaging from the material world and returning to a transcendent essence--all leading to a final fruition in which everything in the universe returns to God and finds permanent happiness. Philosophy, Sadra argues, is the most direct means to self-knowledge--and thus the best tool for navigating this journey.

:somaliland: you are a muslim person, it is compulsary for you to learn your holly religion rather than any thing else, i felt so mad when i met some one naming him self that he is muslim and doesnot know his religion. there is a f-king bad behaviour coming most to our youth, they are all muslims on the mouth, but they are not doing what allah forced them to do. even they are not praying.
