Re: DP Ports World Somaliland Final agreement
$62 million dollars will be released upon signing the contract to upgrade the current port to bring it to modern standards.
Another 160 million will be invested to build a brand new 400m deep sea port which is expected for completion in 2020.
An additional 400m deep sea port will be build depending on the capacity of the current port and the new port which will be completed 2020. If the capacity is at 75% then the money will be released to build it.
What have not been costed is the additional money that Dubai government will invest into the Berbera corridor.

Re: DP Ports World Somaliland Final agreement
we need to diversity from relaying on Berbera alone as the source for the majority of revenue. I believe this will hasten the steps towards that endeavour.
It is not all doom and gloom, although, I suspect that there will short term pain but I think there is a longterm gain. The influx of activity as projected will more or less make for the shortfall of revenue.

The influx of activity?? nice phrase but where this imaginary influx will come from? are you telling me Ethiopia will be the cash cow for DP!! are you kidding me?Maroodijex wrote:we need to diversity from relaying on Berbera alone as the source for the majority of revenue. You don't get it at all , let me break it down for you, DP will own the port for the next 30 years, they will expand the port gradually using their own money and naturally they have to get their investment back , meaning they will increase the port tax on people of Somaliland to extract their rent, so tell me where would Somaliland government get their revenue shortfall for the next 30 years?

Re: DP Ports World Somaliland Final agreement
I concur that there will be a pain in the short term (2 or 3 years) before things start to pick up pace.
I don't have the ins and outs of the agreement specially the lease back details. But I assume that it will be a phased one in order to avoid shocks to revenues.
Moreover, the overarching problem with Somaliland is its reliance of a single income generating source i.e. Berbera port. We need to diversify and look for innovative ways to raise more income. These include changes to the tax system which currently only targets the small traders and border crossings.
We need to also stop relaying on imports. Somaliland looses losts of hard currency by importing 90% of its food needs and goods.

Re: DP Ports World Somaliland Final agreement
So, I have a few more details about the agreement to lease Berbera Port to DP World Ports.
Profit sharing:
1. SL government will continue to collect Tax on all Goods and Services provided by the Port. The income currently collected via Taxation will only increase and not decrease.
2. The SL government will get a lease fee of 5 million dollars a year.
3. The SL government will get 35% of the profits from Port fees. The port fees include shipping fees, stevedoring fees and storage fees.
Investment:
1. DP World will release 60 million dollars to upgrade current port (new cranes, increase in storage facility and provide state of the art port technology).
2. DP world will start building a modern port which will be able to handle modern ships
3. The government of Dubai will provide funds to build the Berbera Corridor.
Other benefits that will be of good to Somaliland include a partnership of SL Government and Dubai to help create jobs by investing in farms and factories. And also allowing Somaliland citizens to travel to Dubai with SL passports.
