Are fewer UK Somalis going to Uni
It seems like fewer younger Somalis are going to University than even a few years ago. When I was at university in the North of England, which feels like eons ago, there were lots of Somalis at my university. In my degree year-group alone there were at least 20 Somalis and this was in a relatively small city.
Maybe the higher fees are putting people off. Or maybe its the demographic trend with less Somalis at that age.

Not surprised. Is a university degree worth it at all?
Re: Are fewer UK Somalis going to Uni
^ Depends on what degree you do and what grade you get. Its worth it if you get a 1.1/2.1.

Somali women out number Somali men when it comes to graduating from university, from what I've seen in the UK/Netherlands/USA/CANADA.

I've always wondered why this is... any ideas?GalliumerianSlayer wrote:Somali women out number Somali men when it comes to graduating from university, from what I've seen in the UK/Netherlands/USA/CANADA.

In a bad neighborhood with absent parents, a guy will usually turn out worse than a girl.Futurist wrote:I've always wondered why this is... any ideas?GalliumerianSlayer wrote:Somali women out number Somali men when it comes to graduating from university, from what I've seen in the UK/Netherlands/USA/CANADA.

Girls are just more sensible. Jk. On a serious note, aside from the general earlier maturity observed in females, there is also the disproportionate amount of responsibility placed on girls from a young age. Expectations are even higher. Her every move scrutinised, her shaah must be spot on, her grades high, her cleaning spotless, her cooking varied, her hair duuduub-ed and her Af-Somali perfect. Home-making skills is a must along with a degree. Anything less, she is not trying hard enough and is labelled lazy or weak.Futurist wrote:I've always wondered why this is... any ideas?GalliumerianSlayer wrote:Somali women out number Somali men when it comes to graduating from university, from what I've seen in the UK/Netherlands/USA/CANADA.
As for the boys , the moment one graduates it is a grand celebration like no other.

Re: Are fewer UK Somalis going to Uni
I believe uni is a waste of time. For me studying business did not help me find a job. I believe uni is only good for those people who study science, engineering and IT based degrees, why because those jobs are high in demand and they pay good money.
Personally if I had a choice I would have never gone to uni I would have done an apprenticeship.
When I got my school results I was laughing at my white friend he only got 5 passes and I got 9.
Because of my Somali parents I went to college and uni.
My friend did an engineering apprenticeship for a train company. 8 years later he is earning £60,000 per year. While me the uni graduate is earning half that. The worse thing is my degree has nothing to do with my job.
Somali parents have this mentality go to school, college, uni then get a job. Unfortunately the world has changed having a uni degree is not a big deal. Why is it always the White male who do the worse in school, but end up getting the best jobs and earning the most money?
This is a big issue and we need to educate the Somali community.
