I believe reading that around 40,000 slaves were absorbed into Somalia in the late 19th century. So they couldn't have numbered 80,000 just 30 years ago.paperino wrote: Thu Jul 20, 2017 7:11 pm According to Wikipedia, they numbered 80,000 before the civil war (about 30 years ago), but now number 900,000. Somalia's population in the late 19th century was about a million (probably half), so the 40,000 figure you quoted is high.Lion104 wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2017 2:26 am I believe reading that around 40,000 slaves were absorbed into Somalia in the late 19th century. Perhaps many perished due to a host of factors such as droughts, early 20th century flu pandemic* (that claimed 50-100 million worldwide, the Sayid possibly being one of its victims), other diseases, conflicts with the local population, etc. When a group is concentrated in a particular area, and a disaster strikes them, there can be significant casualties. What's certain is, while their numbers have been increasing in the past few decades, the numbers of the local people have been shrinking due to natural disasters, man-made disasters, migration, having less children, etc. It's possible the civil war has given Somali Bantus a breathing chance to grow, have as many children, as they weren't physically involved in the conflicts, were less affected by famine due to being farmers or living near the rivers, etc.Lion104 wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2017 10:46 am The link you quoted:
"In the 1840s, the first fugitive slaves from the Shebelle valley began to settle in the Jubba valley. By the late 1890s, when Italians & British occupied the Jubaland area, an estimated 35,000 former Bantu slaves were already settled there."
That's not including the other slaves from the Shabelle valley.
So how can they go from something like 35,000 in 1890 to 80,000 in 1970 (a period of 80 years), but then have their population explode to 900,000 in 30 years?
In British Somaliland one official estimated that 7% of the native population died.
