Are any you of farmers?

Post by Turbulence »

I mean do any of you own farm land back in Somalia? Did you always own it or did you buy it recently? What do you have growing there? Would you say it is profitable?

The MJ kid Monk-Of-Mogadishu who used to post back in 2011 was the only one with some farm areas outside Kismayio

Snetters comes from Darod or Isaq families who fled the big towns during the war

My grandfather was a farmer in Afgooye and my dad grew up on a farm. When my grandfather passed away he inherited part of it. My adeer runs the farm now. It mostly produces liin iyo moos. I think it has real potential but is mismanaged and not really invested in.

The family has about three farms; two in Hawd inside Ethiopia and one in Waqooyi.

One of the ones in Hawd grows mainly oranges (small ones), corn, watermelon.

The other one no idea.

In Waqooyi, this nigga puts it more effort so it's self sufficient farm for mainly livestock, hay, corn, watermelon, chillies, milk, ghee, etc. It's only about 50 minutes from Hargeisa and homeboy never comes down, he just loads the truck.

Farming is very profitable if you grow tomatoes, chillies, sesame seeds, lemon (though produced a lot now days still exported to the Middle East and Turkey), watermelon is great during Ramadan, one single melon can reach $8 some times.

Yes we have farms in Beer village but we produce nothin but Grass ,. Specific type of Grass for the export lifestock , we supply Berbera Port and even boosaso . They are not profitable but sustainable. Farming is a hard work but nowadays more peaple are interested to join this sector. It needs passion.

I used to farm as a kid and grew watermelons, cabbages, spinach, beans, cassava, yams, and tomatoes.

The gold mine is potatoes. It’s a highly priced crop in Somalia and is imported from Ethiopia. Something in the soil causes the spuds not to grow. I am looking at importing several types of varied seeds from Latin America and trying seeding them in Somalia.

The crop I am most interested most in is Khat. If I get a sabbatical I plan to visit Meru and learn the trade. I have identified several areas that share similar geographic conditions as Meru.

Alfalfa does well and is highly nutritious. You mix it with local grass and corn to produce good feed that boosts cattle nutritious and milk output.

I would advise against selling it bro. Maybe sell part of it but not all of it. These farms near Mogadishu will increase in value over time.

My brother bought a small farm in Bardheere for $12,000 about 2 years ago but he hasn't done anything with it. He hasn't even been there yet. What is the name of the area that 2nd farm is in? Also what do you guys do with the fruits/vegetables you grow there?

Where is Beer Village located? If you don't mind sharing, what type of grass does your family grow there?

Afgooye is nice. I remember we used to drive to Afgooye to get fruits (moos, cambe, canuuni etc.) when we lived in Walaweyn/Yaaq Bariwayne area.

That is surprising. I thought Potatoes grow in Somalia without any problem. You will need an army to grow Khat in Somalia. You will have a lot of enemies.
