Well that may be true, laakiin, who knows, the recent report of American military officials making multiple visits to Somaliland, may indicate, on the part of the former, an impending policy shift regarding Hargeisa's long-standing desire to be ictiraafed as a sovereign nation.

^ I, Signor Barbarossa, a noted modern-day Skinny Nostradamus, can say, according to my ever reliable astrological reckonings, beesha caalamka, will, long at last, grant Somaliland its ictiraaf within the next three years or so.

There have been three significant independence movements in Africa, alongside the case of Somaliland. Western Sahara, though lacking substantial control over its claimed territory, was granted recognition by the African Union. South Sudan, on the other hand, had no legal grounds to secede from Sudan, as it was historically an integral part of that country. Similarly, Eritrea was originally part of Abyssinia before being colonized by Italy.

In contrast, Somaliland's case for independence is far more robust. Unlike South Sudan and Eritrea, which were both integral parts of Sudan and Ethiopia respectively, Somaliland was never a constituent of Somalia. Rather, it was part of a union known as the Somali Republic, the defunct Somali republic and prior to colonialism, Somaliland had never been part of a shared country with Somalia. The crux of my argument is this: the longer an independence struggle persists, the more likely it is to succeed.

Somalia, or the "Walanweyns as i always say ," may believe they can hinder Somaliland’s progress by stalling negotiations, ignoring its claims, and hoping Somaliland will eventually abandon its pursuit. However, Somaliland’s record speaks for itself: ten years of fighting for independence, the 1961 coup, and the indisputable legal fact that Somaliland never legally united with Somalia under the Somali Republic. This was confirmed by the African Union’s fact-finding mission. Furthermore, Somaliland has spent over three decades building a functional state and a viable economy. It has engaged successfully with the international community, with mechanisms like the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) and the Somaliland Development Cooperation, set up by the British government, allowing Western nations to assist its development.

Lastly, there is no force within Somalia capable of credibly challenging Somaliland’s quest for independence. With the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa is shifting rapidly—and in Somaliland’s favour.
