Asalamu Alaikum W W
Eid Mubarak!
1-Ahmed Gurey:
undisputed heavy weight somali hero period!
2- Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan:
Obviously his struggle and cause of the nation called somali. a pioneer fighter who resisted for period over 20 years while his enemy/the colonial was equipted with modern weapons including fighter jets. Only great will coupled with a good heart can make you last that long. He had his own political defects but, at end of the day he had a great vission...he's my hero even though he was a reason for many of my forefathers. Remeber where he put our name in the libraries wth hounor and that was not accidental.
3- My mom. Do I need to explain this:)
4 and 5 : All the names except the legedary tales from the 50s till now are not my heroes bunch of crooks and wolrds, call the JDS, SYL or SRC or SSDF or SSRC or ONLF or SL for instance and so on. That does not mean they are not heroes of others.

I have only two in my mind:
Ahmed Gurey: A brilliant Islamist military commander. With the help of the Ottoman empire, he nearly brought Abyssinia on the brink of total collapse.
Sayid M. A. Hassan: Another brilliant Islamist military commander. His forces killed thousands of Anglo-Saxon invaders/occupiers. He won many battles against the invaders/occupiers.

"Hadraawi"
I don't think Hadraawi is one of the greatest. His works isn't even Islamically-oriented. When I see him mentioned, I ask myself: What has he done for the betterment of the Somali conflict or society? Recite some poems? What good does reciting poems do? I think any local doctor curing the sick & wounded is better than Hadraawi.

Ina Cabdulle Xasan has murdered more Somali's than he did the Anglo-Saxon invaders you speak of, and you have the nerve to talk ill of Hadraawi. Hadraawi is the best Somali poet alive today, I can say that with no doubt. He is a legend in his own league.
Poetry is a Somali pastime, you wouldn't understand since it's a Somali thing.

Well, as you have stated it, it's for "pastime", therefore it doesn't make a poet one of the greatest that benefit his/her society. In fact, poetry can do more harm than any good; the link you posted proves it:
Our reporter says that Somali artists have always been accused of inciting the civil unrest in country with their songs and poems.
