Indian firm shortlisted in bid for Ethiopian gas exploration

Addis Ababa - The Indian firm GAIL India Ltd has been shortlisted for the exploration and development of the Ethiopia's huge natural gas reserve in the Eastern Ogaden area, the local press reported Saturday.

The Indian company submitted its bid to the Ethiopian Ministery of Mines and Energy together with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation ((GSPC), the report said.

Other international bidders who applied for the development and exploration of the Calub and Hilal Gas Fields in the vast Ogaden area include companies from China, the Middle East, the United States, and Malaysia's Petronas.

The winner of the bid would be made public on 10th June.

The two gas condensate fields with estimated reserves of about four trillion cubic feet of gas were discovered in the late 1970s by Russian petroleum explorers during the Soviet era.

As the gas fields are in a remote location, about 1,200 kilometres east of Addis Ababa, their commercial exploitation would require the setting up of gas processing facilities and a long-distance pipeline to reach potential markets, according to the twice-weekly newspaper, The Reporter.
