Somali Linked to Al-Qaida Captured in Ethiopia

MUSTAHIL, Ethiopia. June 25, 2006. Reports from the southeastern Somali state of Ethiopia report that the radical Islamist leader, Sheik Dahir Aweys was captured by the Ethiopian Airforce enroute to Dhusamareb, 600 miles northwest of the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Sources close to the operation state that Sheik Dahir Awey's plane, a Beechcraft, was forced to divert course by the EAF and was escorted to an Ethiopian airbase 100 miles from the Ethiopian-Somali border.

Experts on Somalia predict that the apprehension of Sheik Dahir Aweys will only heighten tensions between the weak, fledging interim federal government of President Abdullahi Yusuf and the Islamic Courts Union (ICU). The two parties nearly came to conflict earlier this week when militia belong to the ICU briefly occupied a town, 60 kilometers from Baidoa, the interim seat of the Somali government.

Somalia has been without a central government since 1991 when rebels overthrew the dictatorship of President Barre.
