SOMALI MARINE NOMENCULTURE

We Somalis are not seafaring nation although we atre adventerous enough to work in it abroad(almost all somali migrants to europe worked as seamen straight from camel herding to ocean going ships)
Surria calling Sharks Libaax gave me an idea. What names of sea creatures do you kknow in Somali?
Please see which fishes and mammals you know theire Somali names:
Shark
Whale
Mackerel
Dolphin
Stingray
Manatee
Pilchards

Shark = Libaax badeed
Whale = Nibiri
Mackerel = Qurbac
Dolphin =Neyl
Stingray = daba-miinshaar or Mayuunge
Manatee = Ceesaan
Pilchards = baala-makuuti

Dolphin is Neyl? We call it Hombro. And i nvewr heard of the stingray and Mannatee names. wonderful. This is educational so let hear some more.

I didnt know either. I thought they lived in the Atlantic or something but I just threw them in and voila! there is a Somali name for them afterall.

I just asked my older brother about yaxaas, and he said that we also call Sharks beeshakaano.

Lol@ beshakana. That is not Somali, but derived from Italian pesce (fish) cane (dog).
Danyeer's list is impressive, never knew such words.

you are correct sharks are libaax-badeed.
Somalis(or at least the fishing communities) have names for the various species of sharks.
Burcayd is the great white shark. Burcayd can also mean any ole kind of shark.
Shaqaawis is another species.
Haawilood = foetus of the shark

but before u start to learn about the sea creatures, maybe u should first brush up on the domestic Somali livestock.
Qurbac is a young male camel and ceesaan is a small female goat. Daanyeer had some fun at your expense.
mackerel in somali is tarraaqad
manatee is geel-maanyo or habarey-maanyo in the south.
i have no idea the word for dolphin.
I have no idea what a pilchard is.
