Somaliland defense minister fired

(SomaliNet) The president of the breakaway republic of Somaliland in northwest Somalia Dahir Riyale Kahin Monday sacked his defense minister on allegations that he mishandled the recent war with Puntland.

Adan Waqaf, former defence minister lost his portfolio on the grounds of misguiding the fighting in accordance to a decree issued by the president which further stated that he took the forces out of the town without consultation claiming that the rainy season just began and all weathered roads might be impassable.

The fighting took place in Dhahar town of Sanaag region in north Somalia between forces of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland and Somaliland. Sanaag is one of the two disputed regions.

The two forces fought in the town last week. Somaliland claims that Dhahar, a district in the disputed region of Sanaag, is part of colonial-era “British Somaliland,” while the Puntland leadership also claims the region on the basis of clan relations.

Somaliland and Puntland have fought several times along their unmarked border since 2002, when Puntland security forces chased Somaliland President Dahir Riyale and his military convoy out of Las Anod, capital of disputed Sool region.

I read that Meles Zenawi ordered Riyaale to fired him, Because he went for the battle without the permission of Ethiopia.
