From Debka file:
"The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, and its accompanying carrier strike group, passed through the Suez Canal on Monday, Oct. 30, and arrived in the Red Sea on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
DEBKAfileÂ’s military sources report that the USS Eisenhower is at sea off the Saudi Arabian coast, together with another aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. The presence of the two US aircraft carriers, and their accompanying strike groups, in a body of water as small as the Red Sea is an extraordinary development.
So far there have been no indications that the USS Eisenhower arrived to replace the USS Enterprise.
US Intelligence director John Negroponte also is in the region. He was in Saudi Arabia over the weekend and in Cairo on Tuesday, and is due to arrive in Israel on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
With the arrival of the USS Eisenhower in the region, there are now three US aircraft carriers in the Persion Gulf and surrounding waters, including the USS Iwo Jima. Accompanying the USS Eisenhower are the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, the guided-missile destroyers USS Ramage and USS Mason and the nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine USS Newport.
DEBKAfileÂ’s military sources report that a fourth US aircraft carrier, the USS Boxer, will arrive on the scene by the beginning of next week, together with its carrier strike group. The USS Boxer is currently taking part in joint US-Indian naval maneuvers, dubbed Malabar Â’06, which include the landing of marines on beaches."

MAD MAC,
I guess you must be an intel officer, the dry sarcasm is hilarious
are you British?
I remember the first lecture of my US Naval History class in college.
He defined what it meant to be a 1st Rate Naval Power:
The ability to rapidly project significant naval might anywhere in the world.
By that definition, China is nowhere near a 1st Rate Naval Power yet.........they are still stuck in that Asian Pacific "Sphere of Influence"

Very good, you paid attention. In fact you are quite right. China is only a regional military power, albeit a significant one. But if China had a conflict with South Africa, it would not be possible for China to apply meaningful military pressure. They are challeneged just to cross the straits of Taiwan.
In fact, China's military power is interesting, because although it is a regional power with a fairly large Army, it has no real military enemies. India and China are divided by the Himmilayas and their conflict has long since receded. The Russians and Chinese have also let their conflict subside. Their last conflict, with Vietnam, did not go well for the Chinese. And China has no conflict with Laos or Burma. If you look around China, you don't see a lot of potential for military conflict nor do you see an armed force structured for force projection.

MAD MAC,
Couldn't the same thing have been said about the US 100 years ago....that is, they are too far away, too isolated.........they gotta cross the Pacific or Atlantic just to get anywhere?
The only thing that could bump China up would me a major upheaval like WW-II that would totally change the status quo...........
that way they could get bases around the world and established relationships......
Although I think that would be a lot harder to do for the Chinese than the US because the British did a few hundred years of legwork before the US just took over at the helms in the '40s .
-----Iraq is already changed in so many ways. It will never go back to what was before. Even you know that. You arent sure of where it is all going to go in the future yourself...or you wouldnt be asking us this question.
But I am sure that the US will get that OiL. One way or another we will get it. Its in our interests and its our National Interests at that. You wont be able to stop us.
And Iran is going to go in the bag eventually as well. The entire Middle East top to bottom, end to end is going in the bag over the next twenty years. Adminsitrations will come and go, but that wont change.
The United States is too powerful, too dangerous, too long term determined to have what it wants. The American people may resent the price we are paying and balk at the methods ,but they are all agreed on one thing: they want to keep their BIG MARBLE MALLS and their lifestyle...and one way or another, one administration or another they arent going to care what happens to you raggies if you get in our way.
We will pay for it but we want it guaranteed and we wont pay too high a price for it. If you get in our face we will break your back and take it. There isnt any force on Earth that can stop us.
We arent going to leave until we get what we want. And we dont care how many of you we kill over the next twenty years if you dont like it. Or havent you figured that out yet?
We are in your yard, you arent in ours. You will lose 33 human souls to every one we lose and we can hurt you so bad you will bleed a river and never be the same.
We will stack your corpses up and fill your graveyards, but we wont leave. Either cut a deal with us or be damned.
If we did leave we would cripple you for a lifetime and you would be invaded by your neighbors and they hate your guts. And you would slide over into civil murder and be eaten alive by your own culture. And then we would just come back in another generation and strip the meat of your bones anyway.
No matter what happens Iraq is going to the the graveyard. Get used to it because its going to happen anyway.
Do you think they will pronounce sentence on Saddam this month? He was going to "confront" the West. Fat lot of good it did that fool. Five years from now do you think Iraq will be any more pleasant than it is now? Iraq is going to be a smoking bleeding sh*thole for the next fifty years. One big Moslem toilet. And no matter who wins the Elections in the United States it wont help Iraq any. Democrat or Republican it wont make an ounce of difference.
Clinton bombed you and hit you whenever he pleased. The Democrats want your OiL too. That wont change.
the Endgame is pretty determined. Either give it to us or we take it. That's all the offer you will ever get.
So it isnt Just and fair..it isnt nice? F8ck Nice.
My dad told me a story about driving near a village near the Hawt Lake when they were advancing on Basrah in the early days of the War. There was a circle of Moslem girls dancing in a circle beside the road as the military vehicles filed by in an endless line. they were gesturing to the Vehicles to stop and let them come close and talk to the soldiers. One vehicle did stop and the men in the five Bradleys were furnished with two men who spoke fluent Arabic in the Iraqi dialect. It was a Command Intelligence Unit.
the girls came over and one girl( only about 16 years old) spoke into the window and she said." Come and see our "fish" and she used a word that sounded like "suwat" or something like that..it has a double meaning doesnt it ? Come and see our fish we will sell you our "fish", you will like our fish once you see them." Fu*k nice. Its a village on the shore of the great Hawt Lake west of the Causeway and the swampy areas on the way to Basrah. The girls did it for food. .
