Why Somalilanders Are Deaf To Ringing Declarations
Abdulkadir Dualeh — --- — 28 December, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The intractable strife engulfing former Somalia have confounded foreign observers who are unable to comprehend that such an ethnically and religiously homogenous society fails to come to terms.
To us, who are intimately familiar with the nuance of the issues debated in our society, the battle lines are as vivid as daylight.
The conflict in Somalia is not about land. The conflict in Somalia is about ideology and the type of government.
On one side are the forces of tyranny and government and at any price. On the other side are the forces of individual liberty, the rights of citizens, and of limited government.
The pro-tyranny advocates find virtue in unionism and flags. The pro-liberty advocates subscribe to the old adage “that man does not live by bread alone.”
Let us illuminate this black hole that is Somalia and let us more clearly, perhaps honestly, state the positions of the protagonists.
Why do Somalilanders think the way they do?
On June 26, 1960, a day that will live gloriously in our mystic cords of memory, the public of Somaliland liberated themselves from 100 years of British Colonialism. Like so many other African and Asian nations, those 100 years deprived the gifted people of Somaliland to benefit from the achievements of the renaissance, enlightenment, and the invention of calculus.
The British have deliberately and self-servingly kept us to remain illiterate. When they left, after 100 years of colonialisation, we, in Somaliland, had two high schools, one in Amoud, Borame and one in Sheik, in Togdheer region.
These two schools were used by the British to train paper-pushing clerks who can interpret the Somali language for the English viceroy and his cohorts.
I must say that I like the British people of today who magnanimously and with kindness host our refugees, but I am bitter about the 100 years lost. However, bitterness is a sin and the non-imperial and enlightened British people of today have been so kind to my kin that I will let bygones be bygones.
Motivated by a noble instinct to share destiny with their kin in the newly liberated Italian Somalia, Somalilanders voluntarily formed a union with their brethren. At that time, this decision seemed manifest destiny. The sublime sentiment that propelled Somalilanders to take such a step was patriotism in its most splendid manifestation.
As so often happens to idealist, however, that fateful decision, made at a moment of excitement and euphoria, was rewarded with ruin and disillusionment. The contemporary cruel history of Somalia is too well known to be repeated here in graphic terms. I will spare the reader an uncouth regurgitation of the catalog of unimaginable cruelties and the unmerciful harshness dished out to all Somalis by psychologically depraved few of our own kind.
In the most costly terms, Somalilanders have learned the lesson that unschooled romantic love and idealism can be as deadly as colonialism.
Grieving from these injuries, Somalilanders resolved for eternity that any new union must be based on something higher than infatuation for your Somali brother. Somalilanders have learned that Somalis can be crueler than the British. They have learned that next time any contract for union must be based on something more than a shared color, religion or kinship.
Other Somalis may not see the benefit of Somaliland’s decision to stay out of the present maelstrom, but I sincerely believe that this decision is good for all Somalis. Somaliland’s intransigence is the only reason why tyranny over all Somalia was kept at bay in the last 15 years. We, in Somaliland, could have beneficially acquiesced to any self-proclaimed government, but that would have resulted in a cruel return of the statuesque tyranny with only a change of the personage and the tribe of the chief tyrant. Such a shallow and superfluous façade does not convince or impress aggrieved Somalilanders.
What does Somaliland seek?
In a word. We seek liberty. I.e. individual and national liberty for all Somalis in a verifiable, not rhetorical, way. These sentiments are superior to any other expostulations, misapplied social theories about kinship, or any other appeal to sentiment. Ladies and gentlemen, the calculus of liberty guides Somaliland. We can read a contract. We reject bad contracts for a new union. The contracts offered to us to date are deceptive and unconvincing.
SomalilanderÂ’s can be offered the presidency, the 20 vice presidents and the 11 deputy vice presidents. These fellows only add up to 32 privileged individuals. The privileges offered to these few individuals cannot be a substitute for the wellbeing of 3.5 million Somalilanders. These fellows will enrich themselves at our expense. We crave a system, not trophies.
Hopefully, you may now understand why somalilanders do not follow arithmetic. We operate on the more evolved mathematics of Calculus and we see the big picture. We look inside the gift box, not the wrappings. If we find a nice gift inside the box, we thank you for your wisdom and we campaign to join you. If we find a portrait of blinking idiot inside the box, we part company and chart own course.
That, in a nut a shell, my aggrieved countrymen is the crux of our strife. I am an optimist and I feel that this episode of Somali history is the price we have to pay for progress.
What about the Tigre dwarf, Meles Zenawi?
Any retard can maim a mother in Beletweyn with an incendiary bomb hurled from a borrowed jet aircraft. We have seen these agents of fate before, in1917, when they brought “coomaadayaal duulaya” from Aden. The efforts of these captains may have delayed Somalis emergence in to the promised land of liberty but they did fail to vanquish the inevitable liberation of Somalia.
MeleÂ’s efforts are no different than that earlier failed attempt to keep Somalis down. He will fail as so many others before him have failed. He will jump over a cliff or shoot himself in the skull when he fails to subjugate Somalis. Remember, the powerful Mengistu is an ignominious refugee in Zimbabwe.
The divinely inspired Moses of the Jews prevailed over the mighty pharaohs. Jesus, the carpenter, vanquished the mighty Roman legions because he was in GodÂ’s side. Our prophet, Mohamed, the shepherd, gained immortality when he spiritually liberated the materially rich but spiritually bankrupt brothers and sisters of Quresh tradesmen.
History is replete with accounts of infamous murderers equipped with a sabers coming face to face with unfortunate mothers. Against all odds, the unfortunate mother prevails. These are the stuff of miracles. We shall make new miracles and prevail over the Tigre dwarf.
Vultures are well known scavengers. They do not go after a healthy lion. They wait until the lion is injured in a fight with other lions. The scavenging vultures wait for the injured lion to be infected by a bacterium that saps the vigor and vitality of the magnificent king of the jungle.
Meles is a vulture. Somalis are an injured lion and they are infected by the well-known bacterium “Bacillus Tryranica warlordium.”
Thank heavens, there is a remedy for this insidious bacterium (tyrannica warlordium.) The remedy is called: “make peace, you idiots.”
If we succeed in injecting this sterile remedy into the Somali vein, the vulture will die out of hunger. If we do not succeed, the vulture will eat the rotting tissue of the great Somalis nation. It will fatten and devour the magnificent Amharas, the knightly Eritrean and the great Oromo nation.
What happens if the rest of Somalis objects to SomalilandÂ’s craving for Liberty
In such an eventuality, the law of self-preservation goes into effect. What is refused to amicable method is for the fist to take.
In conclusion
Allah has created the animal kingdom to serve as examples of the myriad consequence of genes expressed by the mammalian DNA code. The variety of instincts manifesting itself in inexplicable variety of animal behavior is nothing more than an expression of the breathtaking permutations and combinations of the four nucleic acids of the genetic code.
Hyenas are a hierarchical society. A dominant female makes all the decisions for a tribe of hyenas.
In contrast, a pride of lions have no hierarchy. They are an egalitarian society. No one is in charge. When a kill of prey is made, no one lioness is offered the right of feasting first. Instead, all lionesses compete muscularly for a piece of the carcass. When lions smell blood, lions are at the mercy of the instinct, not the brain.
Somalis are a pride of lionesses. There is no hierarchy. It is every body for himself. In other words, Somalis smell the blood of the principle of individual and national liberty. Their ears are closed to any other expedient including the wellbeing of the Somali kin or tribe. In the feverish fight for the liberty, Somalis fail to notice the vulture patiently hovering over the sky and awaiting the injured causality of the knightly struggle for liberty below.
An outside observer or a psychologist may diagnose this behavior as symptomatic of insanity and would condemn all Somalis to a lunatic asylum. Another, more compassionate and more forgiving, observer may prescribe to Somalis the remedy of a tyrant. Both of these remedies will fail to cure, or even treat, the Somali disease.
There is only one way to control such a pride of lions and that is to offer a system that ensures individual liberty.
This is the struggle for Somalia. If liberty is offered to all, Somalis will be an example to all of sub-Saharan Africa. Their ideas will spread like a wild fire to Ethiopia, D-Djibouti and beyond. This realization is what scares our neighbors.
May liberty and enlightenment prevail. Allah blesses you all.
