Holy Cow, a post from Helwaa that didn't talk about religion!!!!

This is one of the things I learned to appreciate most about Africa. It really started with my grandfather, who spent a lot of time at my house when I was growing up. But the way Africans take care of their parents is something we should adopt in western culture. There is something to be said for multiple generations residing under one roof, or at least in close proximity. I am working hard right now to convince my mother to move with me to Thailand, because I do not want her going to a nursing home.

You're right here, Mac. Western culture is losing this 'family touch' and needs some kind of self-critizism. In Spain, for example, always grandparents were cared by their sons or moved to their sons' houses until their death. Now they are being 'parked' in assylums, which is unhumane.

The reasons for that are mostly economic. Nevertheless, children should have their grandparents around. And kids should feel more responsibility to their parents than visiting them for an hour once a month in an old age home.
