Who built and lived in the city the longest? Abgaals and Rer Xamar. The current ownership and demographics didn't come about legally, illegal squatters are not rightful owners.
But back to the topic, the destruction of Xamar. If you're the Abgaal who always settled Xamar and Reer Xamar, where else but Xamar can you call "yours"? Most somali clans have ancestoral homes they can go back to but where do these two groups go if Xamar is no more? This is why for them the tragedy of Xamar's destruction is personal while for most Somalis it's opportunity to take potshots at other clans or whatever.

A lot of the recent infrastructure were built by foriegners like the colonial administrations and the chinese (I think they built the olympic complex) after independence. But what was there when Somalis arrived at the city for the first time, what was described by travellers there hundreds of years ago was metropolis of immense size inhabited by abgaals and Rer xamars.

It is well-known who the original builders of Xamar were and who coexisted with them peacefully for hunderds of years.
Banadiri people should be treated with the utmost respect as they are the great builders of Xamar and Benadir Civilization. They are the great merchants who linked Benadir coast to the rest of the Indian Oceans Trade.
Mudulood subclans have peacefully coexisted with those great builders and merchants of Benadir coast. There existed mutual respect, trust and affection between Mudulood subclans and Benadiri people for hunderds of years.
Pastoral clans have been discriminating these great builders and merchants out of pure jealously. These Pastoralists look down on the civilization the Benadiri people brought: the cloth weaving, manufactering, the urban-life, the international trade, the arts&crafts etc. Why? Because Somalis are simple primitive nomads. Wandering around in search for green fields and water, like the herd of animals on Discovery Channel that wander around in search for green and water.
Mudulood subclans should cherish their great history of living side by side with these Benadiri people, and they should restore the mutual respect, trust and affection that existed for hunderds of years. Pastoral primitivennes and Mooryanism must not be allowed to squander the long history we have with the Benadiri people
Benadir belongs to those who have lived side by side for hunderds of years. We must not let Daarod discriminative features and Hawiye mooryanism to influence our relationship with the people of Benadir.
>>reer xamar xalwa duwe<<
That is an example of pastoral primitiveness combined with Daarod discriminative tradition, we should be aware of.
Sadeboy, your grand grand fathers were primitive camel-f.uckers while the great Benadir people were booming in International Trade, enjoying Urban life, prospering in crafts, arts and made Mogadishu the centre of the Gold Trade in East Africa.
You guys have seen the joy of urban life just in 1980's when your Uncle Siad Barre brought all of your camel f.uckers straight from the bushs in Gedo

DD,
If Xamar was originally owned by Reer Xamar and Abgaal, we know and we saw where the reer Xamars lived..Their buildings are still there, where are the traces(buildings) of the Abgaal. And do not get me wrong, I am sure Abgaals are the second in line when it comes to Mogadisho ownership, but I think maybe they came way later than the reer Xamars...
Even Xamar was " Xamar and Xamar daya".. The Original Xamar was baiscaly way deep into the shore if you remember Xamar... When you are at Martini Hospital you can see it very clearly. It is in the sea now.But Xamar daya is where those buildings in Shangani etc are.
Or maybe the Abgaals were Xoolo Dhaqato? Never had buildings and stuff...?
Can anyone address this issue?

Xamar is a Somali city . I was born and lived there till I was 13.
Look at Adis Ababa It is growing up while we kill and fight over who owns this city and that city.

Xamar as a city was built by foreigners. It was even walled. It was off limits for Somali nomads. So of the Somalis, the Reer Xamar lived the longest in the city. But second come a group of around a hundred Majeerteen remnants of the Hobyo sultanate and their families. Men who were Keenadiid's lataliyeyaal. They were brought to Xamar by the Italians forcefully and initially lived there in abject poverty. Xaafadda Iskuraran in Xamarweyne is a prime example of MJ history in Xamar.
When Xamar opened up to all Somalis by the British in the 40s. These Majeerteens became wealthy and poor Majeerteen fortuneseekers together with Murusade replaced them in those old neighbourhoods in the 60s. This group consists of different MJ subclans from Cumar Maxamuud to Cali Saleebaan.
