STUTTGART, Germany, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- An elderly German man who killed an eagle that had escaped from a wildlife center and attacked his dog could face a hefty fine.

But he could also get compensation from the wildlife center, Deutsche Welle reported.

The confrontation occurred in Stuttgart in October 2005. The retiree was walking his dachshund when they came across the eagle. He beat the bird with his cane, killing it.

A court said that the man was to blame for approaching the eagle, with judges finding that, as a hunter, he should have realized that a raptor would have seen his small lame dog as prey.

The potential fine is 15,000 euros or close to $20,000, while the wildlife center could be ordered to pay 500 euros to the dog owner.
