Mogadishu 08, March.07 ( Sh.M.Network) Ethiopian troops in the port town of Kismayu, about 500 km south of the capital Mogadishu, are getting prepared to withdraw from the town.


Reports from Kismayu indicate that the troops would abandon the airport and the seaport where they were based.

Hassan Dhere, a traditional elder in Kismayu who met with the Ethiopian officers, has told Shabelle that the Ethiopians were determined to abandon Kismayu. “They have told me that they want the Somalis to takeover the security of the town,” he said.

A policeman in Kismayu, who spoke to Shabelle on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press, has told Shabelle by phone that the Ethiopian troops deserted the police station and seaport on Thursday morning.

The contingents of Ethiopian troops occupied and took over the security situation in the port town on January 1st, driving the powerful Islamist fighters out of the town.

It is not apparent where the leaving Ethiopian troops would be heading to.

Political challenge in Lower Jubba province has escalated as the clan leaders in Kismayu, the main town of the province, threatened to launch a fight if the transitional government administration for Kismayu initiates collecting taxes, which previously sparked huge row among clans in the region.

Somalia has been in anarchy and chaos since former president, Mohammed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

This is strange news considering how welcome the Xabashi troops were in that town. I thought they would settle there indefinitely. It is good they left and hopefully some of the clans act civilized and share the town without pickering.

Dowladsade, You are wrong about the clans you mentioned as supporting the Xabashi invasion of their country and towns. We are represented on somalinet and I challenge you to bring one individual other than this ignoble rootless ABDIWAHAB who supported the TFG and Xabashi troops like you somalis did. The same way we(those of us outside the country) opposed the Xabashis defiling our country and occupaying Muqdisho and the entire south the same way people in muqdisho collectively opposed.
