Sould the World legitimize the Independence of Somaliland?
Should the World Legitimize the Independence of Somaliland?
There is an underlying problem within Somalia. Most pundits don’t refer to it when they discuss the issue on TV. Nor do the African Specialists when they brief their home Governments. The question is easy to ask but the answer has everyone scratching their heads. The question is what will be the status of Somaliland?
First of all what exactly is Somaliland? Somaliland is the area of Somalia that was known as British Somaliland before the Second World War. It was the base of the Allied Effort to restore the previous Government in Ethiopia after it was invaded by Fascist Italy.
Somalia itself came into being back in 1960 with the merging of the two regions known as British and Italian Somaliland. However after the fall of the Siad Barre regime in 1991 Somaliland itself was a virtually Independent State that was not recognized by the International Community much to the dismay of the people of that region.
While there was a transitional Government in Baidoa and Anarchy in Mogadishu there was a functioning Government in Hargeysa. While the rest of the country became the battlegrounds of warlords stability reigned in the North. But the World still did not notice the calm. But that is changing finally.
It is widely known that Somaliland has close ties with Britain. But other actors are also paying attention as well. Recently there has been a mission from the African Union on a fact-finding mission. Those who are trying to seek funding and other aid from the United States have testified in front of the Congress. Similar initiatives are underway to work with the European Union as well.
Like every other state in History Somaliland has suffered through growing pains as it grows as a Nation. Currently there are members of a newspaper that are in Jail. Several Groups including Amnesty International consider them to be prisoners of conscience. Freedom of the Press is a basic right in most countries. The quick and speedy resolution of this problem could assist in having the Major Powers recognize the legitimacy of an independent Somaliland. They have been functioning as a Independent State for more than a decade so what is the world waiting for?

Somaliland bans commercial flights form Somalia
The government of Somaliland stopped the flights from southern Somalia in fear of the pandemic of watery diarrhea that killed and weighed down the largest number of children, most of them under the age of 6 in southern Somalia.
A press release from the office of the minister for Somaliland air transportation, Ali Mohammed Waranadde, stated that all commercial flights from Somalia were barred from landing at Hargeysa international airport indefinitely.
The minister told journalists that several towns in southern and Northeast Somalia, including Mogadishu and Bosaso, were banned from landing in Somaliland. “To prevent spread of cholera in Somaliland, we decided to stop flights from southern Somaliaâ€, he said.
Hundreds of children beset by the plague were admitted to public hospitals in Mogadishu while a large number of children succumbed to the disease.
Public schools in the coastal town of Merca, 100 km south of Mogadishu, have been turned into medical centers, while students were given one month of a vacation early last week after hundreds of children in the town were ailing form diarrhea.
And in the capital Mogadishu, more than 100 people, most of them children, have been admitted to Banadir hospital on 12 March after they were weighed down by watery diarrhea

Yes as soon as possible, under one condition that they change their name to something that does not have the name "Somali" in it. Off the top of my head may be they should call it "Issaqland".

We were the first Somalis to raise the Somali flag, sang many praises for it and many died defending it. We earned the name, deserve it more.
If it was upto me I would change the name, Somalia is a liability

Lets say that Somalia is a liability for you, point taken. But you have the oudasity to say you desrve the name because you sang and raised the flag.
Please I'm an adult come up with a better argument, this is insulting my intelligence.

Re: Sould the World legitimize the Independence of Somaliland?
In reality the Somaliland government literally rules only the regions of Hargeisa, Sahel and Awdal. Sool and Sanag regions are internationally seen as contested regions and Togdheer is hanging in the air, still using the old Somali currency and relying on former Somalia for its economic survival. The country is internationally isolated, remaining as a pawn and playing to the tunes of its powerful neighbor Ethiopia that will not hesitate to sell Somaliland to the TFG in Mogadishu.
I say more power to Riyoole and his stooges, cause they don't give a damn since its obvious all they care about is benefiting from this Somaliland idea while the rest rot in hell hoping for something that will never come about...maskiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin
