At least eight people are missing and thought to be dead when tsunami hit the northeastern coasts in Somalia on Sunday.

The earthquake with powerful ocean waves hit the coastal town of Qandalla in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.


Reports say that 16 people have been rescued from the waves resulted from the quake while it destroyed many fishing boats.

The chairperson of Qandalla town, Saed Waberi told Shabelle radio that the tsunami hit the coast mid last night causing human and property casualties.

It was for the first time that tsunami hit northeastern Somalia town of Qandalla since December 2004 when such heavily earthquake hit Hafun district of Puntland settlements.
