Armed robbery intensifies in southern Somalia

Aweys Osman Yusuf

Mogadishu 02, May.07 ( Sh.M.Network) -Widespread insecurity exists in Gedo province, southern Somalia near the Kenyan border.

Reports say armed militias set up illegal roadblocks in the main roads that commuting buses and cargo trucks use, robbing passengers and killing people.

Shabelle reporter, Ahmed Salahi in Gedo, said a large number of local militiamen controlled by no leader were accustomed to taking extortion money from buses and trucks while they embark on breaking into people’s homes at night forcefully taking their properties.

Gedo, in the deep south of the Horn of Africa country, is one of the provinces no administration of the Somali transitional government functions.

According to witnesses, a group of armed militias killed a civilian onboard a pick-up truck carrying KHAD, a narcotic leaf commonly consumed in Somalia, while stealing the truck and the Khad it was carrying.

Local tribal elders said they would track down the perpetrators and retrieve the stolen properties.

Somalia has had no affective central institutions since the ouster of former president Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991.
