The rapid advance of Reer Guuri

Post by Warsame101 »

"To the east the Somalis were once more on the move. After 1850 one of the Darod Somali groups, the Marehan crossed the Juba in force. In 1865 they went on to break the Tana Galla and by 1880 had turned on the Boran. Pagan peoples in this region were now being dominated by Muslims, and peasants by nomads from the north."

The Galti troublemakers

"South of the plateau lay the countries of the Ogaden and Gurreh. The Galti were soon raiding both, with the natural result that they also sought to arm themselves with rifles, and gun-running across the frontier increased accordingly. Worst of the tree sections was the Ahmed Wet under their chief Shire, who was reported to be one of the Mullah's followers and consistently refused to meet the government."

My theory that Reer Xassan were the original inhabitants of Jubbaland and that TALXE arrived later in the 1900s.

"The Rer Hassan are the orginal inhabitants. The Isak are further divided into four sections, three of which are called Galti which means strangers, they having come into the country from the north-east during the last six or seven years, in some cases having been with the Mullah. They are typical fighting Somalis and the majority of them have ponies and rifles. Numbers of course are very difficult to obtain and are quite unreliable, but probably the Rer Hassan could put 4000 men into the field and the Galti about 9000, of whom the Rer Farah Ugas numbered nearly half."

Crazy TALXE attack the British.

"The attitude of the Marehan towards the British posts had become increasingly hostile. Bodies of tribesmen frequently collected and fired scattered shots into the camps. On 15th December the Rer Talhe attacked the signal station and took a great quantity of loot, including a machine gun, 50 rifles and 300 boxes of ammunition."

The British tried to disarm Reer Axmed.

"His first order to the Rer Ahmed Wet was issued on 19th May. No notice was taken, and encouraged by this the other sections, who like the Ogaden had been waiting to see what would happen, grew sullen and unco-operative. The Ahmet Wet withdrew to the north, out of reach of the British posts, and it was evident that if they were to be disarmed by force the whole country might flare into open revolt."

Reer Axmed sent threats

"From this time onward Mure, the officer now in political control, attempted to gain much closer contact with the Marehan chiefs. The results were not encouraging. No sooner had the troops departed than the Rer Ahmed Wet sent threats and abuse. The Rer Farah Ugas were openly defiant."

Mareexaan looting from the Italian forces in 1946

"The Marehan who are one of the most warlike Somali tribes had been causing trouble for several years. Many of them were armed with rifles, looted from the Italian forces when the latter were defeated in the Second World War."
