Is Going to College/University a Great Idea ???
My nephew who is 17 is going to graduate from high school next year. He wants to go to vocational school to get a degree in automotive repair but his Mom is against the idea.
He is brilliant at fixing cars based on his high school class in automotive repair. On many occasions, he has done repairs on my car well and for very little.
His mother demands that he goes to a regular 4yr university to study something besides automotive repair.
Why is it that people assume going to College/university is a great idea for everyone ?
What is wrong with trade schools ?
I mean a mechanic charges $60-80 for labor per hour, a hell of a lot more than the average college graduate salary without the heavy student loan load.

Muslim-man,
I agree.
How hard is it to find a good lawyer ? or good accountant ?
Now, imagine how hard it is to find a good mechanic.

I agree with you AW, if that what he wants to do so be it.
With that said I have been to a secondary education institute and NONE of wich I have learnt there can do me good today , so Allah knows best laakiin we ain't in Africa anymore , so let the guy do what he wants.
PS: I meant to say , he can always go back to college if he wants to.

Finishing University is the best thing I have done for myself. yes, its a great Idea for those of us who have the chance to go.
AW,
Ur cousin should pursuit what he love to study but encourage him to go into university and study engineering, in his case.

[Why is it that people assume going to College/university is a great idea for everyone ?
What is wrong with trade schools ?]
People assume going to College/university is a great idea for everyone, because they have been programmed to assume so. It has become a tradition. Few ever do the necessary basic homework on whether what they assume is right. Going to College/university is a billions dollar industry that fattens a few elites (owners, professors, etc). Many unnecessary courses (social, humanities, etc) are taught to maximize the profits. More than 50% of what is taught got nothing to do with the profession one studies. Once the individual graduates, employment is not guaranteed for a host of reasons; lack of experience, lack of clout, the very profession having become outdated, etc. And then there are those who end up having to pay tens thousands dollars in loans they accumulated over the years.
AbdiWahab252, nothing is wrong with trade/vocational schools. I recommend that your nephew finish his school and get certification.

Re: Is Going to College/University a Great Idea ???
we need more tradesmen/women than useless university students.
I mean i graduated uni with a degree in software engineering, i even got good grades
but serioulsy i didnot have an idea.
i was useless entering the workforce.
I believe somalis educational system in the future should focus solely on vocational training.
only after several years a tradesman could you get a university place, where you can upgrade your skills

Re: Is Going to College/University a Great Idea ???
It depends on what he's going for and what he's future goals are. Neither option is better than the other, I know a few buddies who are doing vocation school and they are making good money while still taking classes.
For someone who's into mechanics and cars, it's not a bad idea for him to get into mechanical engineering because their are certain jobs he can't get with just vocational training. Not to mention most engineering programs have extra programs for people who are have the desire to do more than course work, for example in mechanical department in my program, they build a formula one car and race other uni and the students are all involved in the design process. Don't count university out, it's better long term, but doesn't mean trade school is a bad option.

Re: Is Going to College/University a Great Idea ???
I'm having that same dilemma, AW, but since he has two clear paths, I recommend that he takes the brighter one; University.
I have a slightly unorthodox lifestyle, I'm skipping Uni and going straight into the US Army, serving 3-4 years, saving my dollars, and fully opening the second section of my original plan. Then again, like I said, I'm a bit unorthodox.
Plan B is to attend a local college and chip in with several friends to buy a house, saving money on a dorm and building my credit, then sell it when we complete college, if we complete our bills; but we have time and patience.

Going to College unfortunately is the only way to get true legitimacy in most career paths. I bit the bullet, went and managed to finish in December alxamdurilah.
