There is some irony in history . The ones writing history do not know that what they are doing will be considered as great history and people will look back at it with utmost respect. For these people its just a matter of life or death, a matter of survival. The outcome is irrelevant. If they win, this becomes a historic victory. But if they do not get the desired outcome, it becomes historic failure.
The funny thing is: When some group of people are fighting for ideals and doing an admirably thing, there are always others who are on the sideline, indiffirent to the cause the other group is fighting for, or even rejoicing the suffering of the other group out of jealousy or perhaps animosity.
But a couple of generations later, when history is written, there is only one group commemorated by people. And this is the group that was fighting, while the others who were on sideline are forgotten, and their offspring tries to connect themselves in every way to the group which the history is about. So they try to associate themselves with this great history.
A case in point is an experience of mine recently. I was with a Somali friend of mine (Mudulood-Abgal) and an Arab one. We were discussing Iraq and Afganistan. Suddenly the Arab guy said that Somalis were fearless since they were the first to karbash US Rangers and dragg their bodies over the streets. The Somali friend of mine was flattered and said that Somalis are warriors and that US Rangers had to run etc. I had to laugh inside cause I found this ironic since most Mudulood at the time of US Rangers vs Aideeds faction were shamelessly supporting the US Rangers out of animosity towards the other group. On that same night of 2-3 Oct, when one side of Mogadishu was heavily bombarded and had to fight for survival, people on the other side were unfortunately rejoicing this slaughter of innocent civilians in Southern Mogadishu.
Now, history commemorates one group, which is the group that had to fight for survival. The group that was rejoicing is forgotten. Even Hollywood has spent millions to save whatever image the US rangers have left after that shamefull Mogadishu mile.
-Long live to those that sacrificed their lives on that great day, 3 Oct 1993

- Shame to cowards and groups on the sideline
