Puntland cannot sign foreign deals: Somalia PM

MOGADISHU, Somalia Aug 8 (Garowe Online) - The interim Prime Minister of Somalia, Prof. Ali Mohamed Gedi, has dismissed as irrelevant any agreement the regional government of Puntland signed with foreign companies, inside sources tell Garowe Online.

A meeting in the capital Mogadishu between Prime Minister Gedi and Gen. Adde Muse, the Puntland leader, ended in discord after officials could not agree to common ground.

Sources at the meeting said the Somali premier refused to validate any agreement the Puntland authority signed with international firms.

At one point, Prime Minister Gedi even suggested that Puntland create a new flag if it wants to have its own government.

The confidential sources said the Puntland-Jabberi deal was discussed and Prime Minister Gedi specifically refused to accept such an agreement.

The Puntland government signed a livestock export deal with Saudi Arabia-based al-Jabberi company in June. That deal has met growing resistance from Puntland businesses, who complain that the al-Jabberi deal gives one foreign company the unfair advantage of exclusive export rights for the next 15 years.

During his stay in the Puntland capital Garowe last month, Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf met with Puntland officials and business leaders. He sanctioned the al-Jabberi deal, which would allow the Saudi company to build an animal care facility in the Puntland port city of Bossaso.

Puntland President Muse came with Yusuf to Mogadishu to to finalize power-sharing agreement with federal government officials led by Prime Minister Gedi.

Observers said Gedi is excercising his authority as prime minister to oppose regional governments from engaging in international deals, a feat he believes is in the exclusive realm of the federal government.
