It is actually "Frengi" and it had nothing to do with French. Ethiopians, Somalis (as they were then without the "Somalized" crew like Raxanweyn and reer Xamar of today) used to call them "frengi" which had to do with "Franks" the older European tribes of yesterdays like Anglos, Saxons, Normans, Goth, franks, etc
