Arab
You speak Arabic and English?? I am impressed. It's difficult to master three languages when they are so different and your English is excellent. Thought processes skewered, but language skills are good.

Re: Learn Arabic
Well, it might be difficult for the average American to master three languages, but it's not for the average African, European, Asian, etc. In Somalia, we had private schools where Arabic and English were taught. There were also the Egyptian, Italian and German cultural centers.

Re: Learn Arabic
Look, I have lived in East Africa for two years. Your "average" Somali spoke Somali, and that was it. There are people who master multiple languages, but it's certainly not common, in Africa or anywhere else.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, Engilsh is the global lingua franca, and so a lot of Americans don't feel compelled to learn another language (although a lot for ethnic reasons are bi-lingual). I am now in the process of learning Thai, and it's an a$$ kicker. German was pretty easy, but Thai.............

Its not really hard. It all depend on location. If you ever lived in arab country you would eventually learn to speak arabic fluently.

[Look, I have lived in East Africa for two years. Your "average" Somali spoke Somali, and that was it.]
Your experience is limited and cannot apply to most Westerners who have observed Somalis who write/speak multiple languages. By the time you were there, many literate Somalis left Mogadishu. Still, there were the old generation who spoke Italian and Arabic, two languages you know nothing about. Most of the younger generation knew at least how to read Arabic which they learn at madrasah.

If you observe this forum, you have COSTA and HELWAA who write/speak English and Swedish, in addition to Somali. You have shidow1 and maryamu (maria west) who write/speak Kiswahili, in addition to English. You have biko and the other Djiboutians who write/speak French, in addition to English and Somali. You have Demure, Navy9 and hyperactive who are proficient in Arabic. Etcetera. At least Somalis aren't like most Americans who know only English.

Re: Learn Arabic
I think everyone should take up another language other than thier mother-tongue.. Yes Arabic is beautiful but difficult to DIY it. I reccomend those that don't to move to an Arabic-speaking country for a few months, by most a year and you'll come back fluent. InshaAllah

Your very right. Much of the street Arabic now is slang just as every other language. But the basics are still there and at least people will be able to understand the kutbah or the Imam in the masjid when he cries or get the gist of things, hopefully..
