Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Maina Chege, has been charged in court with flying a Somali terrorism suspect into the country.

The ex-police air wing commandant pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on Sh20,000 cash bail by Nairobi Senior Principal Magistrate, Mrs Maryann Murage.

Being the pilot in command of aircraft registration number 5Y-UTD Cessina, Chege was arrested on October 12 at Wilson Airport for flying Mr Abdirizak Farah into the country illegally.

Flying the aircraft operated by Knight Aviation Limited, Chege is alleged to have brought Farah to Nairobi from Kismayu via Wajir airstrip.

The charge stated that jointly with others not before the court, Chege contravened a notification issued by the Director of Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, Mr Chris Kuto.

The notification states that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the ambassador at the Kenyan embassy in Somali must clear Somalis travelling to the country using aircraft.


Police are still searching for Chege's co-pilot and Knight Aviation Limited's operator to charge them in court.

The Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and Immigration Department officers are still holding Farah, who is a Danish national of Somali origin.

The case will be heard on November 20.
