During the cold war the issue of Islam vs. the West was not an issue. Saudi Arabia supported the U.S. over the former Soviet Union...and the war in the Horn at the time was based on the cold war mentality. There is no reason to lump up Islam vs. Western ideology with that of Ethiopia vs. Somalia war of 1977.

UD,

Carter & Siyaad's lack of foresight.

How could he trade the USSR for the USA (who are not known to be dependable allies)

Only if Siyad Barre stopped saying Ethiopia occupies Somali territory, Somalia would have been a united nation. Right after the liberation of Ogadenia, there was a United Nations resolution condemning what they called "Somalia's invasion of Ethiopia". Siyad Barre refused the advice of the Ogadenia elders in not declaring war on Ethiopia. Remember, Ogadenia was given to Ethiopia in 1884 by the Europeans and Somalia became a free Republic in 1960. All the Somalis need to do is say; we are supporting our brotherens in Ogadenia to gain their freedom. Siyad Barre arrested many Ogadenian natives including a great WSLF leader by the name of Uurdoox, Ilaahay ha u naxariistee for suggesting that Somalia need not to declare war on Ethiopia.

We just needed to play the game right!!!

Caku ciil badanaa!! Axmed Diiriye's house in Muqdisho, of all places, was searched by a Tigrean-conscripted Guraaga from Adis...How low can we get!!!

guhaad,

Mohamed Siyaad declared war for other reasons such as to reduce the power of the Somali Army which was the most popular government institution among Somalis. There also many brilliant officers who were nationalist and would have made a coup against Siyaad if he stuck to power longer.

A/W;
There are many things I don't agree with you like your stymied abhorrence for the ICU, but I agree with you on this. Many people who don't know much about Siyad Barre and his political savvy would say he was a natiolist.
I strongly believe that he is responsible for Somalia's destruction.

The thing that changed in '77 was that the Derg came to power in Addis and the Russians changed sides.

Given that the US programs were kicked out of the country in 1969 when Barre came to power and chose to go with the Russian camp, I find Carter's decision understandable.

A proxy war in support of a belligerant ally that had already dumped us once ?

Doubt it.

Remember, it was Nixon that went to China and made peace with Vietnam.

AbdiWahhab, it has a become norm for you to expound pseudo-historical garbage but when confronted with evidence to the contrary, you simply dis-appear, recycling the same crap in a different topic. This is what we call intellectual dishonesty.

guhad122 is another ignoramus whose views are clouded with his staunch hatred towards SADE.

Guhad122, let me teach you a little history. Prior to the ascension of M S Barre (RH), Somalia waged brief clashes with Ethiopia in 1964 which was initiated by Somalis.

But you know what was really troubling and what made M S Barre pledge a promise if he ever came to power? When thousands of Ogaadeens kissed, danced, sung and lastly shoke the hands of the Ethiopian Emperor Selassie somewhere 1956 in Qabri Dahare.

Now let us go back to 1976. Before M S Barre made the declaration of war, WSFL was heavily active in its military campaign against the Ethiopians supported by the Somali National Army. M S Barre excused thousands of SNA Soldiers who were Ogaadeens or had Ogadeen mothers or were sympathetic to the Ogaadeen cause to join the WSLF and fight the Ethiopians. This was considered a cover so that the SNA Army could military prepare itself for the war.

Once M S Barre made the announcement that Somalia would go to war, not did the Ogadeens fully supported the decision but the whole Somali population was behind. Up to 300,000 Somalis showed up during the big rally and the proclamation of the Ethiopian-Somalia war whilst the rest were enthusiastically following it on the television.
