The Bajuni have a long and distinguished history, it was they who founded Kismayo, which is likely the historical site of Shungwaya. According to oral history, Shungwaya was the capital of the Swahili Empire, ruling from modern Kismayo all the way down to Sofala, and exerted hegemonial authority over the pagan "Galla" people of the Juba Valley. It is likely the Ajuran who destroyed Shungwaya, in their expansions against the Galla people, though the Bajuni remained numerous along the southern coast, likely as vassals and tributaries of the Ajuran. When the Ajuran empire crumbled, a variety of Darod tribes migrated into the Juba Valley, pushing out the Bajuni to their islands where they remain to this day.
The Bajuni are a noble people, the former rulers of a powerful empire, and deserve respect.
