Nobody in Africa is more charming than my uncle.

When he first landed in Xamar, an entire band performed for him.

I lied, sort of, LOL.

She's not even Somali, she's 100% Indian and her name is Naseem Sabrina. She is from Djibouti, but she is part of a worldwide Indian pageant. It represents Indians around the world. There are pageants from at least 20 different countries.

You all know Djibouti is too focking broke to finance a beauty pageant.

This is the webpage. Scroll down to the pageants area.

We'd an Indian/Pakistani community in Somalia before the civil war. They mostly owned shops in Shangaani/Xamar Weyne and mostly kept to themselves. Some of them spoke good Somali. They even had a burial ground that was a big compound in Howlwadaag near Oto-Oto in Waaberi district. After the war, I heard even the tombstones of these graves were looted.

The Indians could also be found in the Shabelle and Jubba coastal towns. I also recollect a Chinese restaurant in Xamar called Ming Sing. Mostly visited by contract workers who were building the roads.

Monk,

I remember the Chinese workers who were working on Mashruuca Faanoole in Jubba. They even brought their families along and I remember a few of them even converted to Islam, very respectful people.

Aliyah99,

Many of the Indians/Arabs who fled Somalia ended up in Mombasa & Malindi. At one point in the early 90s, Mombasa was over-run by Somalis or people who used to live in Somalia.

FAH1223,

I am probably older than your father, lol...seriously, I was a kid around 7 or 8 when my father was a government worker assigned to Jubba region. We would see the Chinese workers every morning as they made their way to work, it was a sight to see. Somalia was a wonderful country back then and the people in small towns were 10x better than those from Xamar; very hardworking people who made their living through sweat, specially the Mushunguli farmers.
