I don't think it got anything to do with them being pagans. More likely pollution, poor sanitation, poor sewage, toxic waste and (not the least) industrial disasters such as Bhopal. You have to understand India has a population of more than 1 billion, and the amount it spends (fuel, food, waste, etc) is enormous.
