Somalia: Twin bombings rock Puntland city

BOSSASO, Somalia May 26 (Garowe Online) - Two loud explosions rocked the port city of Bossaso in northern Somalia's Puntland province Monday night with emerging reports indicating that government officials were targeted.

The first explosion happened in east Bossaso, near the headquarters of the Puntland Intelligence Service (PIS), where PIS director Osman Diana reportedly stays.

It was not immediately clear what the source of that explosion was, but locals speculated that hand grenades were used.

The second explosion targeted a vehicle belonging to the armed guards of Mr. Hassan Dahir Afqura, the vice president of Puntland.

Initial reports indicate that a rocket launcher was used to hit the armored vehicle.

Various contacts at Bossaso area hospitals told Garowe Online that no wounded victims were admitted tonight, but that medical personnel were on emergency alert.

Monday night's attacks come on the heels of an explosion the night earlier that set ablaze one of the trucks being used by a contractor for Africa Oil Corp., a Canadian oil company that has began exploration activities in Puntland.

In recent weeks, increasing acts of insecurity have threatened the relative calm of Bossaso, 1500km north of the nation's chaotic capital, Mogadishu.

Meanwhile, a dispute over finances continues to linger among Puntland's government leaders, who have traded accusations over funds totaling nearly $3 million U.S. dollars. [ Full story]
