Ambassador John Yates Answers Unanswered Questions.

Post by Somalian_Boqor »

HOL : Everything on the Djibouti Accord hinges on what the Security Council (or the international community) does - that is: authorizing peacekeepers and deploying them to Somalia in four months. Do you think that will happen in light of what had happen in Darfur (the UN was not able to deliver); What the US government is willing do about this?

Amb. Yates : Well, let me just correct one thing it's not everything that depends on the international community. The first thing it depends on is the improvement of the situation in Somalia. But the short answer is: the United States is the President in the Security Council in this month of June and if the conditions are there to get a Resolution to pass we're ready to see some sort of peace keeping operation. As you can imagine we are going to be pushing very hard.

The rest of the interview is at the below link.

Last thing we need are UN troops gambolling around the place. They did nothing for the Bosnians, we near useless the first time, and I am quite opposed to them coming in now.

For what reason and purpose do you wish foreign troops to walk around on Somali soil. It is galling enough having Habash walking around with impunity, but you want to bring in MORE? Clearly, imposing an unsuitable and criminal government is more important to you that the Somali people.

And what the hell do you mean by my kind?

Peace-keepers don't fight wars, they hold pacts in place. If Alshabaab did not sign Djibouti they will not stop fighting and therefore peace-keepers will never come in and Ethiopia will not leave.

and the situation continues

The irony is those who are fighting to get the Ethiopians out as they say are giving them the reason to stay and also a reason for the international community to support the Ethiopians to stay.

Point taken. However, I do not believe that UN troops would be conducive to anything other than an imposed half peace between belligerent groups, only for the belligerency to come to the fore after they leave.

You know exacly what I mean when I say your Kind.

Anyways this so called "Criminal Government" is more suitable for this country than the terrorist al-shabab and its leadership. That being said if the losers of this war do not want peace deee no one is going to force them beyond their own .We will see what those who appose peace gain out of violence that they are sure not to win.

I'm not in the habit of asking superfluous questions. How about you give me a straight answer?

Why was the A.U sent to Mogadishu? As their is no peace to keep in war torn Mogadishu?

From what I can tell they are going to send in more Africans but those African will have U.N hats on and the ones on the ground will also be given U.N hats.

They are sending in troops no matter what the situation on the ground is. They don't care as long as the troops aren't from the west.

if you read closly the ambassador says they will probally double the A.U troops to 16,000 and turn them into U.N Peacekeepers. At the moment we already have close to 4 thousands A.U troops on the ground. It only takes the west millions of dollars to get the rest of the needed African on the ground in Mogadishu.
