The first Somali man to fly - Gen. Cali Mataan Xaashi
Cali Mataan was the first Somali ever to fly and is therefore regarded as a Somali Hero.
The first flight between Xamar to Hargeisa was named "Cali Mataan Airway" in honour of Gen Cali Mataan Xaashi, the first Somali man to fly and the one who personally built and nurtured the Somali airforce.
The late Caydiid mentions in the book he helped write about the important role the General, then a colonel, helped play in the 1969 Somali People's revolution that put president Mohammed Siad Barre in power:
"Lieutenant Colonel Ali Malan Hashii and two other officers of Siad Barre's own Marehan tribe. Besides this, he chose three intellectuals of his tribe, who were secretly working for him in evolving the political system and the future policy."
Gen Cali Mataan Haashi recognizing the first Somali pilots to graduate from his academy.
Honored by the Somali people:
"15/09/60, waa maalintii sida rasmiga ah loo bilaabay dulimaadki toddobaadki laba jeer isku xirijiray labada caasimadood Muqdishow iyo Hargeysa. Duulimaadkaas oo reer Hargeysa ku magacaabi jireen: Calimataan Airways"

Let's go back 500 years.
Book: FUTUH AL-XABASA
The Conquest Of Abyssinia
Page Number 27
[Ahmed wins over the somali tribes]
When news of the imam leaving for the outlying provinces of abyssainia reached them, a certain person by the name of HIRABU, a chief of one of the somali tribes called MARRAIHAN, had arrived half way around the country of harar. After verifying the departure of the imam to the land of abyssinia, he doubled back and return to his country.
After this, the imam made preparation for jihaad against abyssinia, assembling his troops and the somalis with their leader, HIRABU, who then set out under his command. The imam then got together a vast throng and launched the attack, setting out, he and the muslims, for the infidal territory.

Defeat the numerical superior Ethiopian Army that consisted of 16,000 cavalry and more than 200,000 infantry.
The Somali archers were from the Mareexaan and Gerri clans.
Richard Pankhurst mentions in 'An Introduction to the Economic History of Ethiopia, from Early Times to 1800':
" On 7 or 9 March 1529, at the great battle of ShemberaKure the first decisive clash of arms in Shoa, Arab-Faqih estimated the Muslim army at 560 horse and 12,000 foot-soldiers and that of the Emperor at 16,000 cavalry and more than 200,000 infantry; Ethiopian accounts, on the other hand, put the invading forces at 300 horse and very few foot and their own at over 3,000 horse and 'innumerable' foot-men. Whatever the exact numbers may have been Gran was completely victorious, his chronicler putting the casualties at 5,000 Muslims and 10,000 Christians. An interesting feature of this and subsequent battles was the use of archers on both sides: Gran was supported by Somali archers of the Marehan, Yiberri and Gerri tribes, as well as by a number of Arabs, while the Emperor's army included in its ranks archers from Tigre and Agame, as well as about 3,000 men of the Maya or El Maya tribe who used poisoned arrows."
